Ukraine savages idea of concessions to end war, evokes appeasement of Nazis

Source: Reuters

May 25 (Reuters) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Wednesday savaged suggestions that Kyiv give up territory and make concessions to end the war with Russia, saying the idea smacked of attempts to appease Nazi Germany in 1938.

The angry comments by Zelenskiy and a senior aide come as Ukrainian troops are facing a renewed offensive in two eastern regions that Russian-speaking separatists seized part of in 2014. read more

The New York Times editorial board said on May 19 that a negotiated peace might require Kyiv to make some hard decisions, given that a decisive military victory was not realistic.

And former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger this week suggested at the World Economic Forum in Davos that Ukraine should let Russia keep Crimea, which it annexed in 2014.

"Whatever the Russian state does, you will always find someone who says 'Let's take its interests into account'," Zelenskiy said in a late night video address.

"You get the impression that Mr Kissinger doesn't have 2022 on his calendar, but 1938, and that he thinks he is talking to an audience not in Davos but in Munich back then."

He is truly a global hero.

Does Henry Kissinger really think that anyone living in the 21st century cares what he has to say?

4. Some Western leaders will likely pressure Zelensky to give up territory to stop the war.

The war is hurting every country in one way or another, and leaders worried about their economies tanking may be getting nervous. Food is becoming scarce in some areas while inflation is certainly a problem here and in other countries. But the pressure should be on Putin, not Zelensky.

Whatever sanctions are left should should be imposed now. Cut off any global banking access they still have. Isolate Russia as much as possible. Appeasing Putin by giving him land to end the war now just means that in a couple of years he’ll be back for more. And if he’s truly ill enough to die, whoever replaces him is likely to be just as evil and corrupt. Russia has a history of aggressive leaders who use force to take what they want.

Baltic states too. Whenever I am discussing Russia's war of aggression with people who defend Russian acts, I like to ask them if they would support Russia if Russia decided to take parts of the Baltic states or parts of Finland and Norway. They almost always say they would support Russian actions to oppose imperialism. It's some of the weird stuff ever. It's as if they exist in a totally alternate reality.

The Russian strategy is not to win, it's to inflict as much horrific damage as possible to get concessions. That's why there is so much murder, stealing, rape, etc. They even burn grain silos storing wheat and they've stolen a lot of wheat.

...let me tell you how its worse. Italy, France, Austria, Israel and Germany are all quietly advocating Ukraine to give up territory before its too late. The hope was Putin was not willing to go through a war of attrition, sadly, he appears more than happy to do so. I mean c'mon, what is he actually losing? Old paid for Soviet equipment....and lives which he doesn't seem to care about.

He is obviously going to take the Donbas at this point and will probably push forward to take all the ports. Then its a slow march to Kiev. It's not his Plan A, but is his Plan B. Should he accomplish that, its over.

Should that happen, then Ukraine is no longer viable as a country. From what I've read in other areas, not only is Belarus looking at annexing territory, Poland is also considering, despite their strong stance against Putin (and sadly, they have talked about this before), may have to do the same.

I'm hoping for a better result than the scenario I just laid out, but, both my wife and I are children of refugees.
