They were at places that seemed safe -- but few spaces in America are guaranteed safe anymore.
At least a dozen people were killed and more than 60 injured in at least 10 mass shootings this weekend in the United States.
Some were at graduation parties, a nightclub, a popular entertainment district or a strip mall.
The bloodshed comes as the nation grieves a spate of killings this past month, including a massacre at an elementary school in Texas; a deadly assault at a medical facility in Oklahoma; a racist rampage at a supermarket in New York; and an attack on a Taiwanese church service in California.
The US has suffered at least 246 mass shootings in 2022 -- far more than there have been days so far in the year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. That's the same number of mass shootings in 2021 through June 5. In 2020, there were 161 mass shootings through June 5; in 2019, that number was 154. The non-profit and CNN both define a mass shooting as one in which at least four people are shot, excluding the shooter.

(81,237 posts)These are like adult-size five-year-olds. That's all I can see in my mind. A bunch of unruly five-year-olds, willfully defiant and uncooperative because they damn well feel like it. Because they see it as their "right." So what if it gums up the works. They have a "right"!
Methinks we might need some good-parent behavior-modification to check the bad behavior and start encouraging and reinforcing the good behavior (which I'd relish, because MAN can you get a lot of talking points painting you as the good guy here - enlightened self-interest and all that, and it's the good-guy thing to do!). Just like you'd do if your kid misbehaves.
I just wish I could figure out what concrete steps to take besides urging voter participation. How do we execute this in a practical sense? What do we need to do? Specifically, individually, actively, passively, written or verbal, creatively, defensively, strategically, in a local group if you have one or know of one...?
And what are we trying to achieve?
Because my daddy was a salesman, I grew up with lots of slogans but one in particular that was by far most basic and over-arching of all:
Late to bed
Early to rise
Work like hell
And ADVERTISE!
So we each take a wee bite out of this big-ass pie and work with that wee bite. EVERY little bit helps. Doing nothing gets us nowhere. EVERY wee bit inches us forward.

tumbleweeds blowing past shuttered public schools, public libraries with broken windows and burnt facades fronting empty strip-malls with taped-on "for lease" signs wilting inside darkened windows of empty chain-stores.
