Iowa Democrat Franken will face Grassley in Senate race
Source: Associated Press
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Democrat Mike Franken, a retired Navy admiral, will face Republican Chuck Grassley in the race for an Iowa U.S. Senate seat, winning his party nomination Tuesday over two competitors.
Franken beat former congresswoman Abby Finkenauer and physician Glenn Hurst and earned the right to run against Grassley, who is seeking an eighth Senate term and beat back a nominal primary challenge of his own on Tuesday.
Frankens primary win is something of a surprise, given Finkenauer was better known throughout the state after her 2018 victory over a Republican congressman that made her the second-youngest woman elected to Congress. Finkenauer lost in a reelection bid in 2020 but was a frequent presence on cable television and raised millions of dollars toward her Senate run.
In his campaign, Franken emphasized a need to dial down the political tension in Washington. He also called for adding a public insurance option to the Affordable Care Act.

(111,256 posts)Grassley has blighted our lives in this country for far too long. Nobody in Iowa or anywhere else will see any improvement until that man is out of office, preferably humiliated by a landslide, although I know that's too much to ask in Iowa.
It would seem that Iowa Democrats are finally getting serious about wanting Grassley OUT.
I can tell you exactly why Franken won, he's a retired Navy admiral rather than a defeated Congresswoman with a TV presence.
He's also kidding himself about lowering the tension. You can't do that with Republicans. They have no policies, they have no plans, all they have is pwning the libbies. That will continue until they are largely a voiceless minority. Then maybe some old money and new blood will change things. Or maybe they'll just fizzle out, replaced by another party of people who are decent enough but wrong.

(111,256 posts)with people who might have preferred a progressive or a pretty face or a media name but went for the guy who had the best chance of ousting that old bastard Grassley.
I'm a proud member of the loony left but I'm pragmatic enough to take what I can get, and I'd likely have joined you.

(16,105 posts)Grassley and I think that Franken's military experience and the fact that he saw the world and still came back will resonate with people.
At least I hope so.

(9,988 posts)The governor can then appoint Grassleys son. Since Grassleys age is likely an issue for some voters, I suspect that Iowa Republicans are being told that a vote for Grassley is really a vote for his son rather than an 87 year old who is well past his sell-by date.

A word of caution, we thought Moe Davis, (a very good man and vet) would kick Madison Cawthornes unlikely uneducated ignorant ass and instead North Carolina Republicans voted for that little bitty twerp.
