Chesa Boudin ousted as San Francisco district attorney in historic recall

Source: San Francisco Chronicle

San Francisco voters tossed District Attorney Chesa Boudin from office on Tuesday, favoring a recall effort that argued his progressive reforms were too lenient and made the city less safe.

Boudin was trailing by 24 percentage points, according to the first batch of election results released at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Boudin will be removed from office 10 days after the Board of Supervisors formally accepted the election results. The city’s more moderate mayor, London Breed, would choose his immediate replacement, and voters would elect a new district attorney in November. With a failed recall vote, Boudin would be up for re-election in November 2023.

The results capped off a furious debate over crime and criminal justice in San Francisco, with the two sides fighting over Boudin’s approach to incarceration and rehabilitation and his leadership. As his supporters lauded his efforts to find alternatives to jails and prisons — which he said had failed the public for decades — his detractors slammed him as too permissive.

We will simply get the run of the mill "law and order" morons who try to sentence you to the death penalty for stealing a slice of bread. Painful and inhumane punishments do not contribute to law and order. This guy might have lost his hold on the office in trying to do what he did and made the office look bad. The alternative is destroying lives over relatively minor crimes.

1. Chased out career deputy prosecutors by constantly meddling in cases and overriding decision.
2. Caused the head of the Crime Victims Unit to resign in protest.
3. Filed charges in less than 50% of theft cases.
4. Constantly refused to meet with victims of violence or their families prior to making charging decisions.

The messaging on this is designed to convince people that progressives can't win elections. It sounds like that's not an accurate description of him?

when one liberal happened to make poor policy choices that were soft on crime. They're using him to tarnish liberals who are not at all like him.

conflict with those of a majority of constituents, your choices are to

* change yourself as required to commit to serving the wishes of the majority, or decline to run until you get the majority with you,
* deceive, slander and buy your way into office as needed, expecting to be replaced for cause at some point (bad luck if it happens quickly; some can last for several terms), and/or
* work to overthrow representative democracy and the will of voters who reject your views, planning for plenty of time out of office to do it.

And maybe keep a sign over your desk, "Gotta Contend with the Will of the People, Stupid."

There are plenty of opportunities for reforms but he went way too far. He was too lenient on repeat offenders, murderers, and violent hate crimes.
