U.S. auto-safety regulators have escalated an investigation into Tesla Inc.s TSLA 2.31%▲ Autopilot, after identifying new crashes that occurred with first-responder vehicles at emergency scenes.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a notice published Thursday that it was expanding a probe begun last August into a series of crashes in which Tesla vehicles struck stopped emergency vehicles.

(4,465 posts)firetrucks are involved in 30,000 traffic accidents a year. If Teslas make up 1/10 of 1% of the cars on the road that would mean 30 accidents a year. I can't read the paywalled article but if memory serves Tesla has been involved in a few dozen such crashes so, well within the realm of average.
Not seeing a problem.
My own experiences with AP is that it works fine when used as directed, as a "driver assist" device, not a "driver replacement". And before I get accused of it, I am NOT a fan of Musk, but I find Tesla cars to be well made and pretty safe compared to similar gas cars. I have been driving them for four years, before Musk became a Republican worshiping parody of a Bond villain. I won't be buying his products going forward for philosophical, not engineering reasons.

(121 posts)I've been driving Teslas since 2013 and this is an outstanding, safe vehicle. There are actually two Teslas in my garage right now. The AP system is just fine if used properly to assist the driver, not to replace him/her. That being said, I will not purchase any more Teslas or Tesla products in the future as long as Elon Musk is associated with that car maker. I find him to be an absolutely despicable person. Had I known what an awful person he was, I never would have purchased Tesla cars regardless of how good they are.
