US seeks full reset with Saudi Arabia, effectively moving on from the murder of Jamal Khashoggi
Source: CNN
Senior US officials have conveyed to Saudi Arabia that the US is prepared to move forward with a "reset" of the relationship, and effectively move on from the 2018 murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi in order to repair ties with the key Middle East ally, senior US officials tell CNN.
The planning for a reset is a dramatic about-face for President Joe Biden, who came into office vowing to make Saudi Arabia a "pariah" over Khashoggi's murder. His administration also released an intelligence report last year that directly accused Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of orchestrating Khashoggi's killing.
But officials say Biden, who is under immense pressure to crack down on Russia and lower domestic gas prices amid inflation that's rising at the fastest pace since 1981, has set aside his moral outrage to pursue warmer relations with the Kingdom amid the dramatic global upheaval spurred by the Kremlin's invasion of Ukraine.
"Both sides have decided that for the sake of achieving peace and stability in the Middle East, we need to move past it," said one senior US official, referring to Khashoggi's murder. The Saudis, for their part, consider the Khashoggi case closedand have made that clear to the US, officials said.

(2,580 posts)for 9/11 was never pressed. Since they got the surplus oil, we're stuck with them.
Justice for a few is sacrificed for global well being. Driving down crude prices is one of the best weapons to hurt Russia , just a fact of life.

Biden and the WH are telling MSB that Jared's not in charge anymore and can't do anything for him and SA.
Instead, offers are being made for new fighter jets, tanks, anti-missile aircraft, etc. And MSB may be a jerk, but he wants to make a deal now, not in 2025.

Oil is indispensable for projecting U.S. military power across the globe. It's the lifeblood of the American Empire.

Biden could try Iran first.

Saudi Arabia has way more blood on it's hands than just Khashoggi. There is the ongoing war on Yemen, which the U.S. effectively enables, and the well known brutal repression of their own citizens.

It might also be a good time to try and lean on executive orders to try and get more renewable energy options in place (you, too, Europe). Sure, those orders might be undone, particularly given our current complete disaster of a SCOTUS, but it's worth a try. Climate change isn't going to wait for us to get our act together.

One has to consider the U.S. designation of state sponsored terrorism to be deeply ironic, given the U.S. history of supporting terrorist groups around the globe, including Nicaragua, Cuba, Colombia, and, yes, Iran.

(3,818 posts)their oil and putting it on the market, hence, the Iraq FU. Iraq has 4 times the oil in ground as SA, but because SA is OPEC, Iraq is only allowed to pump so much per day (2M barrels? Something like that.)
If/When Iraq would actually be allowed to access their oil, like other countries, the price of oil would drop dramatically.
Oh yeah, did you know Ukraine has oil/gas fields of their own (again, like 4 times greater than what Russia has) in Eastern Ukraine and, funnily enough, that is the area that Russia wants as their own.
As always, follow the money...
