Ginni Thomas pressed 29 Ariz. lawmakers to help overturn Trump's defeat, emails show
Source: WaPo
Virginia Ginni Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, pressed 29 Republican state lawmakers in Arizona 27 more than previously known to set aside Joe Bidens popular vote victory and choose presidential electors, according to emails obtained by The Washington Post.
The Post reported last month that Thomas sent emails to two Arizona House members, in November and December 2020, urging them to help overturn Bidens win by selecting presidential electors a responsibility that belongs to Arizona voters under state law. Thomas sent the messages using FreeRoots, an online platform intended to make it easy to send pre-written emails to multiple elected officials.
New documents show that Thomas indeed used the platform to reach many lawmakers simultaneously. On Nov. 9, she sent identical emails to 20 members of the Arizona House and seven Arizona state senators. That represents more than half of the Republican members of the state legislature at the time.
The message, just days after media organizations called the race for Biden in Arizona and nationwide, urged lawmakers to stand strong in the face of political and media pressure and claimed that the responsibility to choose electors was yours and yours alone. They had power to fight back against fraud and ensure that a clean slate of Electors is chosen, the email said.

Her attempt to incite Arizona officials to create a fake set of electors in an attempt to rebel against the authority of Congress to certify a legal election seems to mark her as a key player in the seditious conspiracy. She has already said that she paid to hire buses to take people to DC for the rally. How many of the people on those buses were inside the Capitol ransacking it?

(33,345 posts)It's wildly inappropriate for Clarence Thomas' position, but she's always been a crazy GQP partisan.
This isn't a crime - you're allowed to be a crazy person who sends crazy emails that will be ignored as long as you don't issue threats. Nothing will come of this.

(6,531 posts)Nothing may come of it, but confidence in the SC is now permanently eroded.
What kind of "threats" are you talking about that she didn't issue? Urging the taking of actions that amount to sedition? Urging people who could do that under the color of authority to do it? Or. using her position as a SC spouse to urge seated members to break the law?
These people have their heads up their asses. And, you know, having a reputation as a "crazy GQP partisan" does NOT excuse breaking of the law.
Clarence needs to resign.

(33,345 posts)But I don't understand what the crime she committed is. Issuing threats via email or phone or letter is a clear crime; that's what I'm saying. That is not what she did.
If you think Thomas will resign over this, you're wrong. He won't.
"Confidence in the SC" has been eroded for approximately ever - let's pick Dredd Scott as a convenient starting point. It's when they decide FOR Justice and Liberty that we are surprised.

(6,531 posts)Ginni Thomas urged the physical substitution of one set of electoral votes for another. The balancing of interests here, under the First Amendment, outweighs her disregard of regulatory law, and requires that the government take notice to limit such activity. The definition of the word force is evident in the actions urged by her to an organization of those who could eminently cause such action to occur. Her position as the spouse of a SC justice gives more force to the matter than if an ordinary citizen were to discuss such a matter. Further, her advocacy of committing an illegal act sufficient to actually change the government fits the definition of legal force. Under 18 U.S. Code Section 2385, her actions are not constitutionally protected free speech, which urged actions including language of incitement to a political party who was inclined to do anything to ensure that Donald Trump continue in power. This conclusion is supported by the January 6th attempted coup.
I never said that Thomas would resign. I said that he should. Confidence in the SC and its decisions is gone, and I did not broaden my argument to include all previous engagement, so I am not going to address the Dredd Scott decision. And, no, I dont believe that Ginni Thomas will be prosecuted under US Codes, because we are currently showing a reluctance to hold all those guilty of the attempted coup as culpable under the law. We should indict her as a separate attempt to overthrow the government, and test out her Constitutional right to free speech, and see if publishing advocacy of overthrowing the Government via substitution of electors will fly in the face of 18 US Code Chapter 115. However, the Democrats will not do this, because Justice Thomas is sitting up there, and it is his wife who did it.
I would also like to point out that the mad scramble that the GOP did to pass laws which enable them to substitute electors indicates that advocacy to substitute electors is probably an illegal activity, otherwise they would just do it.
