Garland says he is watching January 6 hearings amid pressure to investigate Trump

Source: The Guardian

The US attorney general said on Monday that he was watching the House January 6 select committee’s hearings, as he faces mounting pressure from congressional Democrats to open a criminal investigation into Donald Trump over his role in the Capitol attack.

Merrick Garland also said at a press conference at the justice department’s headquarters in Washington that internal office of legal counsel guidelines did not prevent him from opening an investigation into the former president.

“I am watching and I will be watching all the hearings, although I may not be able to watch all of it live,” Garland said shortly after the select committee concluded its second hearing. “I can assure you the January 6 prosecutors are watching all of the hearings, as well.”

The attorney general declined to address potential investigations into Trump or other individuals mentioned by the select committee at the hearings, saying that could undermine prosecutors’ work and would be unfair to people under scrutiny who might never be charged.

but Trump refuses to show up as instructed, do cops go in and handcuff him?

He'll be surrounded by Proud assholes who will shoot to protect him.
Mar-a-Lago could become the new Waco. What would the MAGA masses do?

Or would he skip town and fly to some other country?
It would have to be somewhere without an extradition treaty with the US. Russia?

If he was in another country would he still run his presidential campaign on the theory that once he becomes president again his new AG would remove the charges?

Indicting Trump does have it's problems.

If Trump were to be charged, I would be highly surprised if a judge denied bail to him. He's not an immediate danger to the public and not a flight risk (assuming the judge takes his passport). It would be a major embarrassment for the Secret Service if Trump were able to slip away from his protection detail.

A hypothetical conviction gets much more interesting. How does the Secret Service protect a former president in a prison? Do they delegate his protection to the prison staff? I'd hate to be the Secret Service or Bureau of Prisons staff member who has to navigate the legalities of that!

if he ended up getting white collar prison for starters

and possibly just house arrest.... The Secret Service could better protect him that way if that's the primary concern.

I swear they know something we don't and were actively complicit in helping carry out Jan. 6th. What were they planning to report if they succeeded? That is a question worth knowing the answer to.
