Gov. Mike DeWine signs bill slashing training requirements to arm teachers in schools
Source: The Plain Dealer
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- As expected, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine on Monday signed a bill that would allow teachers and other staff to carry guns in school after 24 hours of training, down from the 700 hours required under a recent Ohio Supreme Court ruling.
House Bill 99 is meant to make it easier for school districts to arm teachers, which supporters said will make schools a less vulnerable target to attackers. It also creates a mobile training team that will work with schools across the state to help find and fix potential weaknesses in security, among other changes, and sets annual re-training requirements for staff who want to continue to be armed in school.
The bill dates back to a June 2021 Ohio Supreme Court ruling that said school staff only could carry guns if they first underwent the same basic training as police officers, effectively setting the 700-hour training standard. The ruling, striking down a security policy from a Butler County school district, made it effectively unworkable for districts to arm staff, according to critics.
But the measure picked up steam following the massacre in May at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas in which a gunman shot and killed 19 students and two teachers. Republican lawmakers sent it to DeWines desk earlier this month over objections from Democrats.

(5,383 posts)Do I sling my school issued AR-15 over my shoulder with pointy end up, or down?
Will the school supply ammo, or do I have to buy my own?
Do I have it fully loaded, with safety on or off?
Do I keep one eye on the hallway, ready and on edge to jump into no-doubt heroic action, and the other on the kids, while trying to run a well disciplined and controlled classroom?
And the effect on the kids, having a teacher in front of them, armed and on edge, ready for a battlefield scenario?
The 24 hours of training, do I do that in my own unpaid time, or school time? And how much will this cost me?
And can I augment my school issued firearm with some other battle dress, like body armour, helmet?
If I accidentally blow a hole in a wall, will I need to pay for repairs?
And if I have a disagreement with the school principal, is it ok to bring my firearm into his office with me?
Will he have his at the ready as well?
So many questions!

I want qualified immunity.
Who will clean and maintain the killing machine? The janitor? Is he qualified? No, I won't clean it.
What if I get gun oil on my shirt?
Will the government pay for my target practice. I want to work on my double tap.
We probably need a range at every school.
My union demands I get full up training. Including stress, adrenaline training. Or we walk!
Can I get workman's comp if my boobs get chaffed? Eight hours is a long time to carry a gun.
What will the punishment be if a student touches my gun?
I guess this ends giving students a hug.
Can I have a pink gun? They are cool.
I want a stinger for every school. The threat could come from the air.

Ive never handled a gun in my life, and I can tell you there would be no way in hell Id feel comfortable with just 24 hours of training on how to use it, especially in roomful of kids.

(7,895 posts)Police and other armed first responders are the same.
The situational awareness required to defend against an active shooter involves far more than a loaded weapon within reach. The tactical thinking and judgement take time to learn and need ongoing training to maintain proficiency.
What the Governor and legislature have done is create an armed target for the potential shooters to concentrate on.
What happens when the presumed armed savior misses the assailant and collateral injuries or death result from the rounds they release?
The potential for disaster here cannot be overstated.
Consider for a moment how many people have been shot by police while holding what someone thought was a dangerous weapon, which later turned out to be a harmless object like a cell phone. What profile are the teachers going to use to determine when to return fire and at which target?
How many times in recent years have we seen stories where the officer, trainer or other qualified person dropped or otherwise accidently fired their weapon?

(576 posts)Right, let's arm teachers. Because things worked out so well for the armed guard at the Tops in Buffalo, who was also a trained, retired police officer. He ran toward danger, alone (unlike Uvalde cops), fired off shots at the shooter, but the shooter was wearing body armor.
How many armed law enforcement were in the hallway at Uvalde? Who had just gone through mass shooter training in March. How many stood outside? Waiting for orders. Waiting for back up. Waiting to see whose jurisdiction it was to give orders.
How about the Parkland security guard who hid?
The government MAKES students attend school, by law. The GOVERNMENT needs to figure out a way to protect children at school. People need to start suing the government until this happens. Or keep their children home if they can.

(1,121 posts)It's all about the phraseology and the negative connotations that the word "control" invokes in general and especially with firearms enthusiasts - implications that one's freedoms are being reduced, compromised, restricted, or eliminated. That's why the GQP and the firearms industry promote and embrace such terminology instead of advocating for reasonable firearms laws for the common good and public safety. It keeps their supporters in a constant state of fear and agitation that some liberal boogie man is out to get them and their loved ones.

(7,839 posts)Dont agree with the point,
Wuddles440
(1,121 posts)to your opinion, but using the "control" verbiage will never generate the type of universal support for reform that this issue painfully demands! It should be presented and marketed as "public safety" for the common good of all citizens and not as a means of "controlling" citizens. Using your verbiage just reinforces the prime talking point that the GQP and firearms industry have been peddling for decades.

(1,121 posts)regarding effective messaging and basic marketing principles is the reason your insistence on using the language of "control" will never resonant with a significant segment of the public and is actually detrimental to those of us trying to promote reforms of firearms policies. You may not realize it, but you literally make writing the ads for the GQP, firearms industry, and their media easy. Among other messaging, it's the same reason that the GQP cultists always refer to themselves as being "pro life" instead of "anti-abortion." But, hey, you do you - just don't expect your language to change any minds!
