Xi Jinping announces plans to allow Chinese military to undertake 'special military operations'
Source: Australian Broadcasting Corp.
Analysts say China's leader Xi Jinping has set the legal basis for an expansion of the Chinese military's role in other countries, just weeks after Beijing signed a security pact with the Solomon Islands.
With little published detail, Mr Xi's government declared he'd signed off on a set of new trial outlines that allow for Chinese "armed forces operations" that are not war.
Chairman Xi, as he is widely known in China in reference to his position as Chairman of the Central Military Commission, signed off on 59 articles, according to state media, but they weren't published.
Instead, government reports say they set a legal basis within China for the People's Liberation Army to "safeguard China's national sovereignty, security and development interests", according to an article in the Communist Party's media Global Times.

War is war, regardless of the term you use. Invade a sovereign country for no reason other than expansion, and the word may not like it.

(823 posts)to facilitate establishing bases there and expanding its military influence. This is a much bigger deal than most people realize. China would love to establish military ties with South American countries (China is already South America's top trading partner). The Chinese would love to have a military presence in South America similar to the US's presence in Japan and South Korea. This is dangerous to ignore.

(14,747 posts)they are already building a navy base in cambodia.
My point is that a country like china doesn't need a law or decree to do what it wants. It has all the authority it needs in its leadership already.

(4,709 posts)How many nations have we bullied our military into? In how many nations do we have military bases? People in glass houses and all that.
How about we clean our own house? There is no moral high ground to stand on here.

(6,526 posts)It is noted that China is going to emulate Russia. That's all. It is something to be wary of.
Well, at least Yellowstone isn't acting up seismically, which is what I thought that thread was going to tell us.

If I were Taiwan, I would be deeply disturbed right now. I'm sure they'll expect Joe to do something Right Now! Nothing else matters!

(2,992 posts)I've seen the highways built by the Chinese in Ethiopia and Kenya. They're better than some of our highways, though the only traffic is often trucks filled with mineral ore bound for China. They're also building modern ports along the coast to ship resources.
In many hotels in East Africa, one can watch a Xinhua English-language cable news network alongside CNN and BBC. I remember watching it in a bar at my hotel in Malawi, and it featured a panel arguing that NATO had outlived its purpose and should be disbanded.
Chinese companies have already gotten in trouble with authorities in some of these countries by bringing over prisoners from China to work on the infrastructure they're developing. Not only were they not hiring local people to do the work, they were essentially using slave labor, and the people in these countries are VERY VERY sensitive to that.

(621 posts)Is this sort of movement really unexpected, though? I thought most experts on this stuff have been very clear that we're going to see a more assertive China and Russia.
I just don't understand people who were often times rightfully opposed to US (or other western) acts of empire, seem to be perfectly fine when it comes from non-western countries.
