Food and Drug Administration advisers voted Wednesday to recommend authorizing both Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTechs Covid-19 vaccines for young children, clearing one of the final hurdles to getting the youngest Americans vaccinated. The Vaccine and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee held a vote for each vaccine during its Wednesday meeting. Both recommendations were unanimous.
Modernas vaccine is for children ages 6 months to 5 years, while Pfizers is for children ages 6 months to 4 years. The committees recommendations are not the final signoff needed to administer the shots, but the votes will now set in motion a fast-moving process expected to be completed by Tuesday a great relief to parents who have waited more than a year-and-a-half to vaccinate their youngest.
The decision will now go to the FDA, which is expected to grant emergency use authorization to the vaccines in the coming days. On Friday and Saturday, an advisory panel to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to vote on whether to endorse the shots. The final step is signoff from CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky then, shots in arms (or thighs).
Though younger children are usually spared the worst effects of Covid, severe cases and deaths can still occur. This was particularly apparent this past winter, when the omicron wave sent the hospitalization rate of children under 5 higher than any previous point in the pandemic, according to CDC data.

(167,156 posts)There was some interesting discussion that they had about Pfizer's 6 months - 4 years old vax and whether it should have been a higher dose since it wasn't generating as strong a response, although because of that (and I remember the early reports), they submitted it as a 3-dose vax (3ug each dose), expecting that it may need to have to be 4 doses (the 4th probably a booster).
Moderna's vaccines (like their adult doses) have higher amounts of active entities than the Pfizer ones and their is recommended for a 2-dose series (25ug each) for that youngest age group.
You also had one of the members who works at Children's Hospital here in Philly (Dr. Offit) was pushing for considering an eventual approval of a booster at some point for the youngest children.

(167,156 posts)That pattern seems to be locked in for a bit to the point where they are talking about it forming what they call an "Omega Block" with that heat dome ridge over the central U.S. and troughs over the east and west coasts (and the west really has some chilly temps for this time of year.
I think for here, we have been seasonable to below normal but it looks like the ridge is slowly creeping to the east. But for the rest of this month, I think you guys are probably SOL.

(78,258 posts)I use the wgn weather app & the next 10 days is everyday 98-100F, with the "cold snap" being Sat & Sunday, only in los 90s.
Yuk.
Fortunately, I have a superb ductless HVAC system. Very efficient & cheap to run. Whole house 1kw. So I close living room door to bedroom hallway & down to 600w. 👍 not bad with power here costing 7 cents/kwh.
Im amazed how many people here have no AC or can't afford to turn it on! Omg!
