Texas Republicans pass resolution denying Biden won 2020 election

Source: CBS News by way of MSN

The Texas Republican Party officially rejected the results of the 2020 presidential election over the weekend, passing a resolution in its platform that falsely blames election fraud in five battleground states for President Joe Biden's victory over former President Donald Trump. The resolution refers to Mr. Biden as "acting" president.

...

It claims that the elections in five states violated Articles 1 and 2 of the Constitution because "various secretaries of state illegally circumvented their state legislatures in conducting their elections in multiple ways, including by allowing ballots to be received after November 3, 2020."

Reviews of the vote tallies and various recounts did not change the outcome of any state's election. Officials including Attorney General William Barr have repeatedly rejected claims that there was widespread election fraud. The president and his allies waged dozens of unsuccessful legal battles and looked to the Supreme Court to help deliver Mr. Trump a second term in the White House after Mr. Biden was declared the winner, asking the justices to take up numerous disputes that sought to halt the certification of election results from key battleground states.

But the Supreme Court appeared not to have an appetite to wade into the disputes -- it rejected requests to fast-track cases that took aim at the election results in Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia and Pennsylvania and spurned other challenges to the outcome of the election in those four states.

I don't know how much of this nuttiness I can take, but unfortunately, I'm sure there is plenty more coming down the pike.

There is also a lot of stuff about a gun resolution in the article, but I barely skimmed it, as I can't take any more of this.

1. I'm sure their next step is to reject any further dealings with an "illegal" federal government. . .

and to spurn any "tainted" money it may seek to send to their way.

That would be the "honorable" thing to do.

Hard to deny it: Their Lone Star is their Yelp rating.

3. Is this for real?

Wow, the J6 hearings are unhinging the Repub party, otherwise known as the TP. This is just one more attempt to minimize the obvious criminality of Trump and his followers. They still think that just making a declaration undoes the reality of the election. They think that declaring the election to be untrue will save them from the consequences of their actions.

When are the rank and file GOP voters going to see this for what it is? These people don't give a damn about them. They are busy trying to save their own skins. They aren't Patriots; moreover, they didn't have a Party platform before. What a sad thing to think that they have crafted a worthless platform just for their own benefit, and not for the People. What a mess.

5. Texas Republicans have ceased to be a positive factor in just about all aspects of life in Texas.

Their grasp on reality has been fragile for a long time. But one thing they always seem to get: Washington sends Texas back more money than Texas pays in. Now THAT bit they somehow don't find objectionable at all!

I helped Ann Richards get elected Governor. I was part of John Sharp's Democratic run for Lt. Governor. The hatred and stupidity have become so prevalent in Texas that I don't recognize it anymore. My elderly parents (both old Texas Democrats) are the only reasons I stay. Once they pass away, I want to sell my ranch and downsize to some blue area in the U.S. This sucks!!

Texas Republicans warn divisions could hand the governor’s seat to Beto O’Rourke

The political winds are at the backs of Texas Republicans as they head to the midterm elections later this year, but some of the biggest names in GOP politics are warning that trouble is looming on the horizon if they cannot iron out their internal divisions. For most of the six-day state Republican Party convention that closed in Houston on Saturday, the GOP faithful heard pep rally-like optimism in speeches from politicians about how, thanks to President Joe Biden’s poor approval ratings, they are going to take back the majorities in the U.S. House and Senate and send liberal politicians packing.

While Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick had some of the same feel in his speech, the Houston Republican spent a large portion of his address to the more than 8,000 delegates imploring them to get over past political divisions — particularly in the governor’s race — because infighting could hand a win to Democrat Beto O’Rourke. “We cannot take November for granted in Texas,” he said. More specifically, Patrick addressed a pervasive concern in the party that some of the base, upset with the primary results, might skip the election or not vote at all, giving O’Rourke a chance to capitalize in the governor’s race.

“We have to beat the Democrats and we can’t stay home because our candidate that we voted for didn’t win,” Patrick said. “We can not have Beto O’Rourke win.” Although Abbott won his primary with 66 percent of the vote, he’s had trouble with some of the leadership within the GOP for how he’s handled the pandemic and other legislative issues. Allen West, the former chairman of the party, ran against him in the Republican primary in March. Matt Rinaldi, the current chair who was elected to a two-year term during the convention this week, had endorsed former state Sen. Don Huffines over Abbott in the primary initially before later rescinding that to appear neutral in the race.

It led to an odd dynamic this week, with Abbott skipping out on speaking at the official convention meetings for the first time during his two terms as governor. The governor held an informal reception nearby and hasn’t had advertising around the convention like he did at past conventions. Huffines, who was more of a presence at the convention, is adding to the concern among Republicans that some could skip the race. In an interview, he refused to say he’s voting for Abbott in the fall. “We’re tired of having to hold our nose to vote for people who don’t do what we want,” Huffines said. In the Republican primary, Huffines and West each got about 12 percent of the vote. During his speech, Patrick warned that if O’Rourke wins, it has a down-ballot effect that could knock out other statewide Republicans on the ballot.

11. THIS IS CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER, ORGANIZED TO THREATEN CIVIL ORDER. NOT SIMPLE PARTISANSHIP.

The question in every case is whether the words used are used in such circumstances and are of such a nature as to create a clear and present danger that they will bring about the substantive evils that the United States Congress has a right to prevent. It is a question of proximity and degree. When a nation is at war, many things that might be said in time of peace are such a hindrance to its effort that their utterance will not be endured so long as men fight, and that no Court could regard them as protected by any constitutional right...

Restrictions on free speech are permissible only when the speech at issue is likely to produce a clear and present danger of a serious substantive evil that rises far above public inconvenience, annoyance, or unrest.[23] Justice William O. Douglas wrote for the Court that "a function of free speech under our system is to invite dispute. It may indeed best serve its high purpose when it induces a condition of unrest, creates dissatisfaction with conditions as they are, or even stirs people to anger."[24]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clear_and_present_danger

For instance, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit held that a threat was knowingly made if the speaker comprehended the meaning of the words uttered by him or her. It was willingly made if, in addition to comprehending the words' meaning, the speaker voluntarily and intentionally uttered them as a declaration of apparent determination to carry them into execution.[11] According to the 2018 U.S. Attorney's Manual, "Of the individuals who come to the Secret Service's attention as creating a possible danger to one of their protectees, approximately 75 percent are mentally ill."[12]

This is yelling "fire" in the public political theater, and it should not be protected.

It's a call to VOTER NULLIFICATION in the middle of congressional hearings about a coup.

We become whiny, sometimes have outbursts of crying for no apparent reason whatsoever, like when we don't get what we want.

But it's just age and hormones.

Probably why babies aren't allowed to own guns or vote.

ONE if you hyphenate! (Bye-Bye!)

So we show Texas the door, and grant statehood to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. So we'll come out ahead! If you just include one of 'em, the fifty-state flag still works.
