Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards signs abortion ban with no exceptions for rape, incest
Source: The Daily Advisor
Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards has signed a bill to criminalize abortion in Louisiana with no exceptions for rape or incest if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns its historic Roe v. Wade decision.
Senate Bill 342 by Democratic Monroe Sen. Katrina Jackson built on Louisiana's 2006 "trigger law" to outlaw abortion if the Supreme Court ever reverses Roe, which seems likely after a draft decision doing so was leaked in May.
Jackson's bill specifically exempts pregnant women from prosecution but doubles the 2006 penalties for doctors or others who terminate pregnancies to a maximum $100,000 fine and 10 years in jail.
Edwards, a devout Catholic who has a record of supporting abortion restrictions, said he would have preferred exceptions for rape and incest, although he has signed a previous bill without such exceptions.

(5,969 posts)but he argues that signing this law rather adds exceptions in comparison to another law that would come into play if Roe falls. Still, it feels disgusting.
It seems more anger should be directed at those writing these laws.

(9,988 posts)for being alive and daring to think they have any rights. They dont. Men get to control their lives. Louisiana has the honor of having the highest maternal death rate in the US. California has the lowest rate at 4.0 per 100,000, followed by Massachusetts at 8.4, so a pregnant woman in Louisiana is almost 15 times more likely to die than one in Californiathe difference between backward Republican states and Democratic states.
For most developed countries in Europe, the maternal death rate per 100,000 live births is 1-4.
Notice that most of these states are run by Republicans. Its quite b ious that Republicans do not care about the lives of women, just about their ability to punish them for having sex.
Here are the 10 states with the highest maternal mortality:
Louisiana (58.1 per 100k)
Georgia (48.4 per 100k)
Indiana (43.6 per 100k)
New Jersey (38.1 per 100k)
Arkansas (37.5 per 100k)
Alabama (36.4 per 100k)
Missouri (34.6 per 100k)
Texas (34.5 per 100k)
South Carolina (27.9 per 100k)
Arizona (27.3 per 100k)

But there are woman-hating nutjobs everywhere, calling themselves Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists (!), Zoroastrians, or not proffessing any religious faith at all.

(9,142 posts)However, how can our party include people who actively take away basic human rights from half of the population of the state they govern with the stroke of a pen?
You can save the argument, "Well, would you rather have a Republican in that office?".
You've got to draw the line somewhere, or else you are no better than the stinking GOP.
I draw the line at a woman's right to control her body. Fuck this guy and fuck Katrina Jackson too.

(38,427 posts)of his everything & exposed his soul to the world. To sign this ahead of a future Supreme Court Decision..with
no exceptions for rape or incest is beyond belief. It proves he cares about nothing but himself and
his deep rooted hate for women. The rape & incest part is the telling key. There is little more to say about
this woman hating ass**le

(21,148 posts)And isnt he up for re election? Pick the Republican devil or the Democratic devil. If re elected he might be able to get the law undone.
( Im giving him the benefit of the doubt) but I am pissed he signed it!!!!

(32,024 posts)Plus he's the only statewide Democratic elected official in Louisiana, so politically he has to throw some bones to conservatives to survive (think Sen. Doug Jones of Alabama).

(9,142 posts)I think we would agree that those bones shouldn't be from Louisiana women that died from back-room abortions.

(3,166 posts)but in this case the governor AND the person sponsoring the bill are both Democrats.
I don't really understand John Bel Edwards on this. He is term-limited and can't run for governor again. Why would he do this?

Maybe folks from Louisiana can chime in on that question.
