FDA orders Juul e-cigarettes off the market, citing insufficient and conflicting data
Source: Washington Post
Juul, the once-booming Silicon Valley start-up widely blamed for igniting the youth vaping epidemic, was grounded Thursday by federal regulators who ordered its e-cigarette products off the market, a move so sweeping that it surprised even some anti-tobacco advocates. The Food and Drug Administration denied Juuls applications to continue selling e-cigarette devices and pre-filled cartridges in menthol and tobacco flavors. It was the most dramatic action in the agencys years of effort to crack down on youth vaping.
The decisions are part of a campaign by regulators to ensure e-cigarettes are appropriate for the protection of public health. That means a product must be more likely to help adults to quit smoking than to entice young people to start vaping and potentially get addicted to nicotine. The FDA, in its announcement, said Juul must stop selling and distributing the products and that those on the U.S. market must be removed.
Todays action is further progress on the FDAs commitment to ensuring that all e-cigarette and electronic nicotine delivery system products currently being marketed to consumers meet our public health standards, FDA Commissioner Robert M. Califf said in a statement. The agency said the applications lacked sufficient evidence regarding the toxicological profile of the products to demonstrate that marketing of the products would be appropriate for the protection of the public health.
While the agency said it has not received information to suggest an immediate hazard associated with the use of Juul products, there is insufficient evidence to assess the potential toxicological risks of using the JUUL products. Juul did not have an immediate comment on the FDA actions.

(10,037 posts)It's a dumb move with ZERO scientific evidence of anything to justify it. It will be overturned in the courts and rightfully so.
