MADISON, Wis. (AP) Doctors across Wisconsin said they would immediately stop providing abortions, even as questions remained about the enforceability of a 173-year-old state ban, following the U.S. Supreme Courts ruling striking down its Roe v. Wade decision on Friday.
Wisconsin has an 1849 law that bans abortion, except to save the life of the mother, but whether that law is enforceable is expected to be challenged in court. Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul, a Democrat, said he would have news next week about how his office would respond to Fridays ruling.
The nonpartisan Wisconsin Legislative Council, which is comprised of attorneys who advise the Legislature, indicated in a memo that the enforceability of the state ban will likely have to be decided by a judge.
Under the Wisconsin law, doctors could be charged with felonies for performing abortions and face up to six years in prison and $10,000 in fines.

(9,124 posts)Although abortion services are not available in Wisconsin for now, Planned Parenthoods doors across the state are open and PPAWI is here to help patients get the care they need. This includes helping patients access safe abortion care where it remains legal, offering travel assistance, and providing appropriate follow-up care when they return home.
We have strength in numbers and power in our united voices. We can achieve change by getting out to vote for candidates who will restore safe and legal abortion access in Wisconsin.

Republicans have tried to shut them down for decades, not caring that millions of poor women would lose access to all reproductive health care, including those who carry their babies to term.

(404 posts)CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- The only abortion clinic in West Virginia is no longer performing abortions as of Friday.
Katie Quinonez, executive director of Womens Health Center of West Virginia, said the U.S. Supreme Courts ruling issued Friday that allows states to ban abortion is making an immediate, hard-felt impact.
The state has an abortion ban law on the books that makes providing abortions a felony carrying three to 10 years of prison time. Its unclear how the state will proceed on enforcement.
Roe has never been enough, but in states like West Virginia, it was the only thing protecting abortion access, Quinonez said.
We will not stop fighting for the abortion rights of every West Virginian, the Charleston center said in a social media post.
They will remain open for services including providing birth control, doing cancer screenings and providing pregnancy support, they said. ...
