TYLER, Texas — Five people were shot and injured early Sunday during an outdoor event in East Texas that featured a trail ride, according to authorities.

The Smith County Sheriff’s Office said it received a call at 12:35 a.m. Sunday about multiple gunshot victims in a large pasture area in the eastern part of the county. People were taking part in an annual trail ride sponsored by Unified Elite Riderzz from nearby Marshall, Texas.

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith said a 13-year-old was one of five people who were shot at a trail ride event in the county over the weekend.

According to a press release, the Smith County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Operations Center got a 911 call about multiple gunshot victims at a property in the 18000 block of FM 2767 at about 12:35 a.m. Sunday.

Smith said the first gunshots reportedly happened near the stage area due to an argument. He also said it was reported that security on the scene took firearms away from the patrons and would give them back when they left the event.

“I’ve got some issues with that,” Smith said. “The new constitutional carry does not cover anyone who is intoxicated. You cannot carry a gun while you are intoxicated. There’s alcohol being served out there, they’re intoxicated, how many convicted felons did we hand pistols back to? So we’re gonna investigate that part of it, we’re gonna investigate the organizer of the event.”

Ironic the event group is called "Unified Elite Trail Riderz". They appear to be neither elite or unified.

So, the sheriff will be going after the event organizer and the security company. In typical fashion, blame anyone but the drunken perps after the fact. In the school shooting, it became a teacher and an unlocked door.

I'm so grateful our medical systems believe in preventative medicine rather than allowing diseases to run willy-nilly until half the populace is dead. If they operated like right-wingers, all the deaths would be blamed on defective Band-Aids.

If you really want to dive into it at what point did anyone say that the shooters are not culpable? They are. That doesn’t mean that the organizers didn’t have a responsibility to keep (or attempt) attendees safe.

I incorrectly assumed if it was a large gathering of trail riders in Texas, they most likely were white, although the OP's article never referenced race.

The point I had in mind and should have outlined separately is that particularly in local press, we rarely learn post-investigation that a shooter simply is void of core morals, has anger control issues, lacks good raising and/or was brainwashed by radicals . With the addition of mental health problems, those are the basic causes the nation needs to learn from and none of those issues are specific to any race. Our proliferation of guns enables people with those problems to kill very easily.

I do see a local media pattern across the country of a white shooter's identity (name and photo) kept hidden or considerably delayed, whereas if the perp is black, Latino or Asian, their name and photo is typically revealed very quickly. Social media seems really bad with this racial bias as well. Then, there's the serious problem of racism in many police and other municipal departments.

I'm very much a supporter of strict gun regulations. However, if those that do own them are sane, rational and have good temperament and humanistic morals, they won't grab a weapon to address minor disagreements.
