SAN ANTONIO, Texas, June 28 (Reuters) - Two Mexican nationals were charged in U.S. federal court on Tuesday in connection with a deadly human smuggling attempt in which at least 51 people perished after being trapped inside a sweltering tractor-trailer truck in San Antonio, Texas.
The two Mexican defendants, who were arrested following Monday's incident, were charged with possessing firearms while in the United States illegally, according to court documents and U.S. authorities.
The deceased migrants, 39 men and 12 women, were discovered on the outskirts of the south Texas city, where temperatures swelled to a high of 103 Fahrenheit (39.4 Celsius), in one of the deadliest human trafficking tragedies in recent history.
Authorities called to the scene found the truck parked next to railroad tracks, with bodies inside the vehicle and strewn over a couple of blocks, after the rear door of the trailer had been opened, a local law enforcement official told Reuters on Tuesday.

(1,045 posts)Second wind. Read the article to the end . The T & T units are
US registered. The poor souls probably walked across the border
and met the mules. A American porous border for sure. My Irish born Canadian
Grandfather did that way back in 1890. Him and a buddy jumped ship
some where in Uruguray and walked North .The ship was an
American whaler.

Unless Customs x-rays the trailer, how would they know there are migrants in the rest of the trailer?

(36,017 posts)to start with, since none of the dead can help. There's more money in human trafficking than drug trafficking. There's so much death and suffering from this global level of capitalist corruption, I hope they can map out the trafficking network (coyotes, maybe?) and not just catch the drivers. It's probably a jurisdictional problem, and so maybe it's hard to do on the other side of the border, which could be full of all kinds of informal networks.

Maybe migrants crossing the Mediterranean from Libya, but from Mexico to the US?
