Biden calls for filibuster carveout to protect abortion rights

BY BRETT SAMUELS - 06/30/22 9:31 AM ET

President Biden on Thursday said the Senate should carve out an exception to the 60-vote filibuster to codify abortion rights after the Supreme Court overturned the precedent set by Roe v. Wade.

“The most important thing to be clear about is I believe we have to codify Roe v. Wade in the law, and the way to do that is to make sure the Congress votes to do that,” Biden said at a press conference at the NATO summit in Spain.

“And if the filibuster gets in the way, it’s like voting rights, it should be we provide an exception for this, requiring an exception to the filibuster for this action to deal with the Supreme Court decision,” Biden added.

There are not 50 senators who support changing the rules around the filibuster, however, making Biden’s suggestion unlikely to go anywhere.

Regardless, we have to try anyway

And like the good little Repug-in-sheep's-clothing he is, he uses that power to destroy and not to create. You'll never see, "Manchin proposes plan to help people," or "Manchin suggests strengthening [insert name of the Bill here, e.g., Build Back Better] by adding..."

No, it is always "Manchin says he will vote against..." without his ever suggesting a compromise solution -- or any solution. The filibuster has to go.

President Biden said Friday that he would support an exception to the Senate’s filibuster rules to make it easier to pass legislation protecting abortion rights and ensuring other privacy protections.

Biden, speaking at a news conference in Madrid, renewed his call for Congress to act in the wake of the Supreme Court decision last week overturning Roe v. Wade.

“And if the filibuster gets in the way, it’s like voting rights,” Biden said. “We provide an exception for this.”

Under Senate filibuster rules, 60 votes are required to advance most legislation. Democrats have not been able to advance abortion protections in the evenly divided chamber.

Because we all know King Manchin is going to dig in his heels.

We need more democratic senators so he isn’t such an impediment to progress.

at the source. Bribe or threaten Manchin and Sinema as needed. In the meanwhile I’ll be working and donating for a blue tsunami in November. Hopefully we can make the two DINOs irrelevant. But the Repugs are doing so much damage to voting rights at the state level, I fear November may be too late.
