UCLA and USC in Negotiations for Move to Big Ten Conference, Reports Say

Source: NBC LA

UCLA and USC are in negotiations to move from the Pac-12 Conference to the Big Ten Conference in a shift that would dramatically re-shape the college sports landscape, according to reports.

The Los Angeles Times, citing multiple sources, reported Thursday that the Trojans and Bruins would leave for the Big Ten Conference as early as 2024. The move is expected to include all sports, except beach volleyball, a source told the Times.

The Pac-12 Conference has not confirmed the negotiations, first reported by the Mercury News. ESPN reported, citing a source, that the process of formally applying to the Big Ten is underway.

UCLA and USC have been members of the Pac-12 Conference for nearly a century. The Bruins and Trojans would move form one storied athletic conference on the West Coast to another based in Chicago with schools primarily in the Midwest.

2 & 3 hour time difference between PST & CST/EST.

The travel alone will be murder on their performance, and it's not like they outclass the rest of the Pac 12 consistently.

Follow the money.

With name image and likeness money going directly to revenue sports athletes, there is no money for athletic department to cover scholarships, coaches, travel etc.

But the big ten network and the way that they share revenue ensures a balanced athletics budget. Although the crazy added expenses of all that travel may make it difficult.

A lot of college athletics departments will be forced to dump all non-revenue sports because of the shift if big donor money.

There is going to be a lot of jumping around and a lot of athletes are going to lose scholarships so that the big football players and basketball players get big bags of cash and wrestlers, swimmers, baseball, softball, volleyball, etc get cut.

And then divide into 8 team divisions. The winner of each division makes the playoffs in a 16 team tournament - but then again, I made this up just right now.

I came up with a plan about 2 years ago that would put all D1 (FBS - which is stupid because what the hell does Football Bowl Subdivision even mean?) into 8 conferences, no divisions. The top 2 teams play for their conference championship. The eight winners go to the playoffs. In effect, a 16 team playoff system that would rake in more money than they could ever dream of. No popularity picks. No sneaking in the backdoor to the playoffs (Alabama, twice) by not playing in their conference championship game. Every game counts. You win, you're in.

why split money with 130 schools when they could split the money among 40-45 schools and also delegitimizing the remaining programs in recruiting of the best players

as much money as the PAC 12. SEC gave $54.6 million in revenue, Big 10 $54.3 million and the PAC 12 less than$20 million each. No wonder the LA schools are leaving.
