Less than 36 hours after a shooter opened fire at the Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, killing seven people, Vice President Kamala Harris arrived in the north suburb Tuesday evening calling for federal action on assault weapons.
Weve got to be smarter as a country in terms of who has access to what, in particular assault weapons, said Harris, who was joined by Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering and other Democratic politicians. And weve got to take this stuff seriously. The whole nation should understand and have a level of empathy to understand that this could happen anywhere in any peace-loving community. And we should stand together and speak out about why its got to stop.
Earlier in the day, Harris called for reinstituting a national assault weapon ban.
We have more to do. We have more to do. Congress needs to have the courage to act and renew the assault weapons ban, Harris told a group of educators at the National Education Association conference at McCormick Place in Chicago. We need reasonable gun safety laws. And we need to have Congress stop protecting those gun manufacturers with the liability shield. Repeal it. Repeal it.

(16,793 posts)There is NO need for Military grade civilian versions of the M-16 or higher powered weapons for the general public.
When I see photos of men with AR-15s slung over their backs or sides, the first thing that comes to mind is "What are these people trying to prove?"
That they are wealthy enough to afford all the accessories that go with their "BIG BOY GUNS" while they complain about the prices of food, rent, and gas for their over sized pickups? There is something psychological going on here as they over compensate for their overall smallness.
Justice matters.

Not ALL players, just the fringe of coward bullies (and they exist).

(10,921 posts)Make liability insurance mandatory for every firearm in the country. Let the industry set the price. The penalty for not having a policy must be high, adding a mandatory 20 year felony to whatever crimes that gun owner has committed. This way the victims families have a financial nestegg to draw upon when they lose a loved one.

(100 posts)All of the press that I have seen said that Crimo used a high powered rifle.
But what kind of high powered rifle? From the rate of fire, Id bet good money that it was an AR-15 clone of some sort. But LEOs and the media seem to avoid that term or anything like it as if they are wanting to suppress public reaction. Nah, that couldnt be.
