Former White House counsel Cipollone to testify before Jan. 6 committee

Former White House counsel Pat Cipollone (Jabin Botsford/The Washington Post)
Former White House counsel Pat Cipollone will testify Friday morning after receiving a subpoena from the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob, according to people familiar with the matter. Its unclear what limits there may be on his closed-door testimony, which is scheduled for about half a day, according to a second person familiar with the matter.
The session will be videotaped, but there will be some limits on what he will testify to regarding direct conversations with former president Donald Trump. Cipollone had been reluctant to testify to the committee, citing presidential privilege, but he has been regularly mentioned in the hearings and is key to a number of episodes being plumbed by the committee.
The individuals spoke about the committees plans on condition of anonymity to freely describe private deliberations. The committee issued the subpoena last week after blockbuster testimony from a former aide, Cassidy Hutchinson, identified the lawyer as having firsthand knowledge of potential criminal activity in the Trump White House.
The decision followed extensive negotiations between Cipollone and the committee, as well as sharply escalating pressure on him in recent days to testify. Committee members have come to believe that the former counsels testimony could be critical to their investigation, given his proximity to Trump and presence during key moments before, during and after the attack on the Capitol. Cipollone sat for an informal interview with the committee on April 13, according to a letter from the panels chairman, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-Miss.), but he has declined to cooperate further.

(8,905 posts)Is what it sounds like to me.
In other words, most of the people in this country, who really can't read and comprehend, REALLY WON'T GET THE IMPORT OF ANYTHING HE SAYS, which really won't be much if his testimony is limited to certain areas.
The committee has been suckered into a BIG FAT NOTHING interview if you ask me. Transcribed, so it will just be more print on a TV screen that is not even Fox.
And for all we know, Merrick Garland is just hanging around until a future date that makes his federal pension bigger and fatter.
Like that guy in southern district of New York. Vance. I bet anything he walked out the door the day after his federal pension increased another bracket. Successor goes in and finds he's been playing Tetris on his computer. Fuck it all.

No show, go to jail. Period.
BumRushDaShow
(169,747 posts)but in order for the "now show, go to jail" they would have to do a criminal referral to DOJ and wait for them to do the grand jury for "Contempt of Congress" (which is what Bannon's trial will be about, which is still scheduled for July 18 last I saw), and on and on...
Since people like him just saw Navarro get the "treatment", that is why the J6 Committee were hoping some of these others would stop bucking the process (which is what Mastriano did earlier after refusing to acknowledge the subpoena but then relented - basically trying to do the "minimum" to buy time).

(10,803 posts)Client/Attorney privilege thing.
I'm sure he'll be able to say some things, but I don't believe he'll testify to direct conversations with Pendejo45 himself.
Personally, I feel that if he's getting paid by tax dollars, then he should be able to speak to any subject including conversations with Pendejo45 himself. Should be completely transparent except for national security issues, which I believe Jan. 6th has no part in national security.

And I don't know why this privileged continues after the president is out of the White House. Seems there is a lot about that type of position that lends itself to criminality if the wrong person gets in its slot.

(8,849 posts)Trump from marching to the Capital is not executive privilege..it's panic...and I expect Cipollone's "testimony" will be a masterclass in word-parsing..

(41,631 posts)She came in afterward when there was ketchup on the wall, and maybe a broken plate on the floor (?) I don't know. Cassidy told us that the White House waiter and perhaps someone who was in the room at the time, saw Chump throw it and and told her about it later. I guess that's why executive privilege doesn't apply.

Cipollone is a surname of Italian origin, a nickname for someone with a big head from the augmentative of the Italian word cipolla meaning "onion"

(169,747 posts)and used them for a pot roast. They are bigger than pearl onions but smaller than the small yellow or white onions, which makes them perfect for that application (along with chopped or sliced carrots and the baby Yukon gold potatoes). They are sweet and are good for roasting.

(6,115 posts)Ms. Hutchinson testified that he was trying to prevent the orange motherfucker from leading an armed violent mob to the Capitol. He may have very valuable information regarding the orange motherfucker's intent and state of mind. This information can go a long way to getting a conviction.
From what I read, he wanted the subpoena rather than going in and voluntarily offering up his information, ostensibly to protect himself against the orange motherfucker. He may have evidence that exonerates himself but can convict the orange motherfucker.
Of course, he may be in it up to his neck in other criminality, but he may be one of the few people who can testify what the orange motherfucker said and did and what his intentions were that day.
I believe the committee is videotaping all of the depositions, so that isn't anything unusual. Think about the timing: he's going to testify Friday and the next hearing is next Tuesday. Could be explosive.

I'd like to think they will at a future hearing, but just don't know.

(169,747 posts)So I think the fact that they are going through all thees machinations means that they will probably show it in context to whatever they are putting together for a future hearing.
