Emails show White House initially planned to nominate anti-abortion Republican to federal judgeship on the day Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade
(CNN)The White House informed Kentucky Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear's office in late June -- the day before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade -- that President Joe Biden intended to nominate an anti-abortion Republican as a federal judge in Kentucky, according to emails obtained by CNN on Wednesday through an open records request.
In an email dated June 23, White House aide Kathleen Marshall, who works in its office of intergovernmental affairs, wrote to Coulter Minix in Beshear's office that Chad Meredith was "to be nominated tomorrow" to the US District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky. The subject line of the email read "Close hold," and the body of the correspondence included a summary of Meredith's resume.
Minix responded the same day, writing in part: "appreciate the heads up."
On June 24, the Supreme Court rocked the nation by announcing its decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and eliminate federal abortion rights. CNN reported this week that White House counsel Dana Remus had assured senior aides that the ruling would not come on that Friday, amid Democrats' growing frustration about perceived lack of urgency from the Biden White House following the Roe decision.

In essence, McConnell has begun the process of engaging in hostage-taking.

After a very rocky start Clinton fired his Chief of Staff and brought in someone who could do the job properly. A bunch of complacent people in this administration need a fire lit under them.

We don't have to like everything he does but he does enough good to balance it out . And their is no rule that says we can not discuss what a politician actually does. No Democrat is going to do 100% what we like. Truth does matter. Team blue will always look bad to those maggot Republicans, they will never admit it when we do good and they purposely lie to make us look bad, fuck them and fuck their opinion. .
That's pretty clear.

No Dem should make any deal with any r at this time. r's can't be trusted. they do not have our country's best interests at heart and they do not give a damn about Americans.
I admire President Biden, but I'd like to see him take off the gloves. Stop the r's now, they have already tilted the playing field beyond reason.

except in the reverse..didn't Joe do to Mitch (Chad Meredith) what Mitch did to Obama (Merrick Garland)..and the delicious irony of it all, Mitch's medieval asshole judges overturned Roe v Wade, something Mitch has been salivating over for years, at the same time Biden was set to nominate a Kentucky anti-abortion judge..and now that nomination is on hold, probably indefinitely..well played Joe..

This is nothing more than Dem bashing. The media is ginning up one "crisis" after another to denigrate Biden and discourage the Democratic vote. The far left is happily going along.
Do we want to win in November?

because they are no longer subject to the filibuster along with other presidential nominees. There is something called a "blue slip" where a senator can "hold up" a nominee by not returning it, but that's only custom or courtesy. IIRC, McConnell ignored that when he was majority leader. Schumer can do the same now and should.
You missed the point, McConnell can hold up the appointment of U.S. Attorneys, they are not included in the filibuster carve out for Federal Judges. Biden was apparently "trading" the confirmation of two U.S. Attorneys, in return for the appointment of a Republican anti-abortion Federal Judge. The Judgeship is a lifetime appointment, the U.S. Attorneys serve at the pleasure of the President, which some regard as a somewhat shortsighted trade. The lack of U.S. District Attorneys doesn't much hamper the Justice Department from functioning, as there are deputy Attorneys in place who fill the vacant seat on a temporary basis. Adding another lifetime Judge approved by McConnell is likely to have much greater long term consequences than some vacant U.S. Attorney positions.

(17,574 posts)If it's US Attys, agree it's a bad trade of a lifetime appointment for temporary political appointees. There are plenty of excellent career US Attys to run any individual office.
