Secret Service erased text messages from January 5 and 6, 2021 -- after oversight officials asked for them, watchdog says
The US Secret Service erased text messages from January 5 and 6, 2021, shortly after they were requested by oversight officials investigating the agency's response to the US Capitol riot, according to a letter given to the House select committee investigating the insurrection and obtained by CNN.
The letter, which was originally sent to the House and Senate Homeland Security Committees by the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General, says the messages were erased from the system as part of a device-replacement program after the watchdog asked the agency for records related to its electronic communications.
"First, the Department notified us that many US Secret Service text messages from January 5 and 6, 2021, were erased as part of a device-replacement program. The USSS erased those text messages after OIG requested records of electronic communications from the USSS, as part of our evaluation of events at the Capitol on January 6," the letter from DHS IG Joseph Cuffari stated.
"Second, DHS personnel have repeatedly told OIG inspectors that they were not permitted to provide records directly to OIG and that such records had to first undergo review by DHS attorneys," Cuffari added. "This review led to weeks-long delays in OIG obtaining records and created confusion over whether all records had been produced."

(13,480 posts)The Secret Service should have been purged during and after the Obama years when someone agents seemed to allow a lower standard of protection for a black president. Now that Trump corrupted a number of them, everyone with whom he came in contact or hired or was a manager over those agents needs a thorough review. I hate to think Bidens safety being in the hands of a Trump loyalist or the VPs safety being in the hands of a white supremacist.

(20,591 posts)Before he's fired he needs to be questioned by the FBI. Thoroughly, using "enhanced interrogation" techniques. For days, if not longer.
This is a cover-up of monumental proportions. This could have all sorts of security implications reaching the highest levels of government.
That guy has some serious 'splaining to do.

(20,591 posts)They should question Tony Ornato, the head of Trump's SS detail who was "promoted" to Trump's Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, but this time under oath. Several White House Aides have accused Ornato of lying about conversations with Meadows concerning Trump's Lafayette Park photo-op, and about Cassidy Hutchinson's conversation with Secret Service Agents concerning Trump's grabbing the steering wheel of the limo on the way to the White House after his J6 Capitol speech.
This guy sounds like a Trumpanista from the word 'go'. After Trump left the White House he tried to slide right back into the White House SS detail. He was reassigned to a training post outside the White House detail before President-elect Biden took office after Bidens allies complained that some agents were too close to Trump, according to a December 2020 story in The Washington Post.
There are more than a few people around the White House that I wouldn't trust. Better to be safe than sorry.

(9,056 posts)because it looks as though the Secret Service knowingly and purposely (important legalese) destroyed evidence they knew had been requested as part of an investigation. This is absolutely huge. Not entirely unexpected if you take a big overview of the way the Orange Ruski and company put their cronies in every nook and cranny in DOJ,DOD,CIA,FBI and no doubt the SS. Those last initials are such a weird coincidence. There will be more disclosure of destruction of evidence to come from others about others. Remember how weird it seemed at the initial hearings about 1/6 last year when we couldn't even get a straight story from the cops, Guard etc. about the phone calls and who knew what and what they did or didn't do with the info they had? The media will likely memory-hole this in a day or so. The IG letter is dated July 13th. That is the same day in 1973 that Alexander Butterfield told the Watergate Committee investigators about the secret taping system at the White House. A weird coincidence on the 49th anniversary of one of the most significant disclosures of that scandal. It was the following Monday on the 16th that Butterfield appeared before the Committee publicly. Let's see what our media does.
If anybody should think that the SS is above all of this I would remind them of recent disclosures of misbehavior over the last decades. Also that when Ted Kennedy was given SS protection while campaigning for McGovern his SS detail included a SS agent who had been Nixon's former bodyguard and the evidence and testimony revealed that Nixon placed him on that detail with orders to spy on Kennedy and report details about Kennedy back to Nixon.

(186 posts)The Secret service was regarded as the elite of the elite. The premier unit assigned to protect the lPresident and the Vice President and their families with their lives if necessary. They were to be alert, loyal, and discreet.
What we have had for years is bunch of conceited, sloppy, party boys who can barely keep themselves out of the tabloids.
Theres a longline of appalling sex and alcohol scandals, several complete failures to maintain routine security measures, and now we have partisan politics in the ranks and outright defiance of a records request (demand) from the Inspector Generals office, supposedly resulting in destruction of the requested records.
The Secret Service is in deep and dirty and I hope the January 6 Committee exposes it to the public.
Time for a thorough house cleaning and I doubt Merrick Garland has the stomach for it.
