DC police officer in Trump Jan. 6 motorcade corroborates details of heated Secret Service exchange
Source: CNN
(CNN)A Washington, DC, police officer has corroborated to the House select committee investigating January 6, 2021, details regarding a heated exchange former President Donald Trump had with his Secret Service detail when he was told he could not go to the US Capitol after his rally, a source familiar with the matter tells CNN.
The officer with the Metropolitan Police Department was in the motorcade with the Secret Service for Trump on January 6 and recounted what was seen to committee investigators, according to the source. A spokesperson for the committee declined to comment. A spokesperson for Metropolitan Police Department did not immediately respond to comment. The description of the angry exchange between Trump and his Secret Service detail was a striking moment during the June testimony from former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson.
Hutchinson said that she heard a secondhand account told to her by then-White House deputy chief of staff Tony Ornato that Trump was so enraged at his Secret Service detail for blocking him from going to the Capitol on the day of the insurrection that "he reached up towards the front of the vehicle to grab at the steering wheel" and "then used his free hand to lunge towards" his Secret Service lead agent Robert Engel. Hutchinson testified that Ornato told her the story in front of Engel and he did not dispute the account.
Neither of the agents named in the testimony have commented publicly on Hutchinson's testimony. But soon after it, a Secret Service official who would only speak on background, said Engel would deny parts of the story regarding Trump grabbing at the steering wheel and lunging toward an agent on his detail. The agency has said the agents involved would testify to that effect, though they have not yet gone back to the committee to testify.

(22,218 posts)Protect the president's privacy. I think maybe they're taking that rule too far. Think about it, the SS knows every single detail of a president's activities 24/7 for however long he or she is in office. Minute details. They have to. But that's also a political gold mine for the opposition, whoever that might be. Thus, they are a notoriously tight lipped bunch. BUT...In this case, the fate of the democracy is at stake, so they really need to set that unwritten rule aside, if for nothing else, to avoid perjury. The not so unwritten rule about our judiciary and Congress.

During the 4 years he was in office. I'm sure they could tell a lot of stories if they so chose. A lot of baby tantrums they had to endure.

(22,218 posts)Their job is to protect the president, not be a source for political attacks. Then again, what if the president is actively planning sedition or even treason? One would think their oath to the Constitution would kick in.

This person has corroborated some of what Cassidy Hutchinson says.
CNNs @evanperez reports that a DC police officer backed up some of the details surrounding former President Donald Trumps alleged altercation in the limo with the Secret Service on January 6.

When they do those motorcades (and before I retired, I would try to steer clear of them since I worked downtown near I-95 where that was used for the direct route to/from the airport), you not only have the feds with them (all sorts of units), but the local police participating as an escort ahead and behind.
For example, this was a video from when Biden was on his way to Robb Elementary in Uvalde -
Every one of those vehicles were part of the motorcade. All other vehicles are cleared from driving on the route until the motorcade has passed.
So in the case of 45 on January 6, you had piles of LEO there in addition to the SS - and probably moreso given this was at an outside event and someone (or many "someones" ) saw something. You would have local and state motorcycle patrols, local marked and unmarked vehicles (of all types - cars, vans, even buses), as well as trucks (the above video showed what looked like either a bomb squad and/or SWAT truck).

(1,189 posts)Listening to the video, I'm still just getting that he corroborated something, but we don't know what.
The angry exchange is what's important. The stuff about Trump lunging for the wheel and grabbing someone by the throat is a distraction, imo. The important part is he was very determined to get to the Capitol.

(169,761 posts)using a preponderance of evidence to show that what happened January 6 wasn't just "spontaneous", but was planned, coordinated, and sanctioned by the very top.
I.e., 45 would waltz into the middle of the crowds outside of the Capitol and declare victory while the Electoral Count tally was underway.
This revelation about the plan resulted in everyone around knowing that allowing that to happen would be even more explosive than what we saw eventually happen, and that was when THAT plan was thwarted - with the fuss that ensued described in the OP and earlier testimony.
