Biden drops plan to name anti-abortion lawyer backed by McConnell as judge

July 15, 2022 at 6:10 pm PDT

WASHINGTON — The White House is abandoning plans to nominate a Kentucky lawyer who opposes abortion rights and is backed by Sen. Mitch McConnell to a federal court seat, citing opposition from Sen. Rand Paul, McConnell’s home-state colleague. The resistance from McConnell’s fellow Republican marked a new twist over a potential nomination that had prompted outrage on the left. Democrats were incensed that President Joe Biden’s team had agreed to advance a conservative chosen by McConnell to fill a district court vacancy as the party is stepping up its focus on countering new abortion restrictions.

The prospective nominee, Chad Meredith, had successfully defended Kentucky’s anti-abortion law as a lawyer for the state. Biden’s plan to nominate him was made public by the Louisville Courier-Journal just before the Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade precedent that established abortion rights.

McConnell, the minority leader, who has a deep interest in shaping the federal judiciary, said the White House intended to follow through on its commitment to nominate Meredith until Paul objected. Paul informed the White House that he would not return a “blue slip” consenting to the nomination of Meredith, who is now in private practice.

but it does have shades of Mitch v Obama...I suspect Biden had intended to nominate Mitch's guy as long as Roe v Wade was still established law..and when the loathsome six on the court overturned Roe v Wade and Mitch defended the court's decision Meredith's nomination was not going to happen...

It was McConnell saying this and I don't trust McConnell as far as I can throw him.

Even so, this better not be the only reason. Or is Biden saying this only to fuck with McConnell?

It was a boneheaded move to work with McConnell and nominate this fuck in the first place. I'd like to know more. However, telling McConnell it was because Paul objected might have given Biden a face-saving out as far as McConnell is concerned.

But I want to know why he was working with McConnell in the first fucking place. You can't make deals with McConnell. He has proven himself to be wholly untrustworthy.

Trading one conservative judge in Kentucky for another, with an undisclosed deal made between McConnell and Biden. Clearly Biden thought he would get something more valuable than one conservative federal judge in a red state. Until the eye doctor took a closer look, so to speak.

What is wrong with this guy? Of course there's no time to answer that question in full, I still wonder what's on his mind.
