Trump education secretary says 'Department of Education should not exist'

Source: The Hill

Former Secretary of Education Betsy Devos believes that the department she once led should be abolished.

Devos, who spent four years as the education secretary during the Trump administration, made the remarks at the inaugural “Moms For Liberty” summit on Saturday, according to the Florida Phoenix.

“I personally think the Department of Education should not exist,” Devos told the mostly conservative crowd in Tampa, Fla.

Devos was a leading proponent of “education freedom” during her time in office, promoting vouchers to allow families to choose their children’s school.

3. Eliminating the DOE was a goal of Reagan
Sun Jul 17, 2022, 09:08 PM
Jul 2022
UPI report from January 29, 1985:

President Reagan, citing little congressional support, will not recommend closing down the Education Department, a major goal when he took office in 1981, it was revealed today.

“I have no intention of recommending the abolition of the department to the Congress at this time,” Reagan said in a letter to Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah), chairman of the Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee.

Reagan said: “As you know, I have previously recommended the abolition of the Department of Education.

“This was because I believed that federal educational programs could be administered effectively without a Cabinet-level agency. While I still feel that this is the best approach, that proposal has received very little support in the Congress.”

(Of course, the House had a Democratic majority - albeit a more conservative one than today's - throughout the '80s. The Senate had a Republican majority from 1981-87 after flipping from 25+ years of D majority in '80.)

The first US Department of Education was founded in 1867 under President Andrew Johnson but was downgraded to a mere Office of Education within the Interior Department a year later. But education returned to the presidential cabinet in Eisenhower's first year, with the founding of the Deparment of Health, Education, and Welfare. In 1980 under Carter, the "Health" and "Education" parts were split in their own departments.

Richard Nixon isn't looked back fondly, both due to Watergate...and being insufficiently conservative (creating the EPA and instituting price control).

Gerald Ford was also not conservative enough; there's a reason Reagan was a legitimate primary challenger all the way to the '76 convention.

Both Bushes are now named mud on today's right: Bush the Elder due to violating his "no new taxes" pledge and Bush the Younger for many reasons: The Iraq war, expanding the surveillance state, the bank bailouts, and not being the "no amnesty, close the borders" type that TFG was.

So why have a Department of Education? It’s incredibly telling that every time a freedom hating lunatic shares a thought it’s always prefaced by “I personally think” or “I believe” or “in my opinion” or “ some people say”. Fitting because they sure as hell don’t KNOW. I had an awesome High School Debate Teacher and I remember one of her lessons when I was a sophomore in 1970. “If You Assert you must PROVE.” Oh how quaint conservatives have made that notion. To paraquote a movie line and assigning it to conservatives. Facts? We don’t need no stinking facts. And another movie line dedicated to MAGAs everywhere - You can’t handle the truth.

Moms for Liberty is an American conservative 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization that says it advocates for parental rights in schools.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] The organization has campaigned against COVID-19 restrictions in schools, including mask and vaccine mandates, and against school curriculums that mention LGBT rights, race, critical race theory, and discrimination,[1][4][6][9] and multiple chapters have also campaigned to ban from school libraries books that address gender and sexuality issues. Moms for Liberty has been likened to the Tea Party movement and the Moral Majority organization.[1][8][10]

Moms for Liberty has been criticized for harassment from its members, deepening divisions among parents, making it more challenging for school officials to educate students, and having close ties to the Republican Party rather than being a genuine grassroots effort.

The US Department of Education shouldn't exist.

There would be no need for it if the individual states were doing their jobs properly.

The Department of Defense shouldn't exist either because nations should be able to figure out a way of settling their differences without killing each other, whether they're led by a Putin or a Mother Teresa.

Stop signs shouldn't exist because people ought to be able to figure out that its dangerous to drive through intersections without stopping and looking for oncoming traffic....

The state’s students were near the top in performance metrics on federal tests and now rank in the bottom third. Her push for religious schools and for-profit charter schools robbed the public schools of money while delivering inferior education. I’m not sure Michigan schools will ever recover, but that is what Republicans try tondo to education in every state they control. There’s a reason students in states like W. Virginia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Texas perform below the national average on the NAEP test.

Yet with their access to endless luxuries and endless idleness they want to f*ck the little girls and boys. They want to get rid of democracy. They want to sleep with their family members, they want to be rid of an educated populace. They want to bribe and buy our government. They want to murder an steal with no legal accountability. They want mythology to serve as law. They want to dump their waste into the air to destroy our planet.
