Biden poised for big wins in Congress

Source: Washington Post

The first major prescription drug legislation in nearly 20 years. More than $50 billion to subsidize computer chip manufacturing and research. A bill that would enshrine protection for same-sex marriage.

After a turbulent stretch in which much of President Biden’s legislative agenda seemed to be foundering, the president and his party may be on the cusp of significant wins in Congress that the White House hopes will provide at least a modest political boost.

Most politically resonant is a bill to let Medicare negotiate drug prices, a hugely popular idea that Democrats have been pursuing for more than 20 years. Even before that — possibly within days — Congress is likely to pass a bill providing $52 billion to the U.S. semiconductor industry, intended to bolster the U.S. economy and cut China’s influence. “We’re close, so let’s get it done,” Biden said of the bill on Monday. “So much depends on it.”

...........

The legislative wins come at a precarious time for the president and congressional Democrats, who have struggled to overcome poor public views of the economy due to persistent inflation as well as Biden’s low approval ratings. While several recent polls have shown congressional Democrats slightly improving their standing against Republicans, they remain at serious risk of losing their House and Senate majorities in November.

Because they understand that we have two evil DINO's in the Dem party and a bunch of treasonous, reich-winged, rotten ass bunch in the obstructionist party aka the GQP US Taliban Party on the reich-wing who uses the crooked Opus Dei high court as their representatives, and who rule in favor of the GQP's murderous culture wars legislation.

With all of this bogus, slanted to the far right polling, I never see ANYTHING asking what these people who are supposedly polled think of the GQP US Taliban party. It's only ever Dems in disarray, red wave still coming this fall even with Roe overturn, or gas prices dropping and Biden is still blamed for them going up in the first place. We don't have a so-called liberal media. We have a right-winged, mostly corporate, slanted way to the right greedy for ad dollars corporate media.

Didn't that same one senator go on something of a tear earlier this year claiming specifically that it was wrong for a single senator to go against the will of the caucus - and that he would never do such a thing?

“We’re close, so let’s get it done,”

...I'll believe it when I see it...

...the average voter knows we own the Congress and the Presidency but can't seem to get much done due to lack of Party discipline...

...the average voter has a long list of issues...economic issues, historical issues, political issues, social issues but our lack of cohesive Party discipline isn't one of them...

...if we can't solve their problems and improve their lives they'll try to find someone who will...

"..may be on the cusp of significant wins in Congress.."

‘Chips-plus’ bill advances toward final passage in Senate

An economic competitiveness package meant to boost U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and scientific research is on track to pass the Senate this week after overcoming a filibuster on Tuesday.

The Senate voted 64-32 to invoke cloture, limiting debate on the measure and teeing it up for final passage by Wednesday, in time for the House to send it to President Joe Biden’s desk before the August recess.

Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., said in floor remarks ahead of Tuesday’s vote that it would set up work to wrap on the bill “before the end of the week.” Schumer said the moment was several years in the making and described the package as “one of the most consequential bipartisan achievements of this Congress.”

snip=========================================================

The bill is a trimmed-down version of a broader economic competitiveness package the Senate passed last year. After bicameral conference negotiations to resolve differences between that measure and a House-passed version hit snags, including on trade, the Senate pulled out chips and science provisions with the hopes of wrapping up a package by the time lawmakers left for their summer break.

The chips-plus package includes $54 billion in five-year grants for semiconductor manufacturing and research as well as 5G wireless deployment, a 25 percent tax credit for investments in semiconductor manufacturing facilities through 2026, funding authorization for the National Science Foundation and other science-focused measures from a bill Schumer worked on with Republican Sen. Todd Young of Indiana.

snip==========================================================

As expected, Sanders was the only member of the Democratic caucus to vote against advancing the chips bill, which he has derided as "corporate welfare."
