Oakland to pay $1.5 million to fired police chief Anne Kirkpatrick

Oakland is poised to pay out $1.5 million to former police chief Anne Kirkpatrick after a jury found that she was wrongfully terminated in 2020.
The payout covers a year of Kirkpatricks salary, attorneys fees and other litigation costs.
In May, a jury sided with Kirkpatrick who had alleged corruption within the polices civilian oversight commission. The jury said in May that Kirkpatrick was entitled to $337,000, or a years worth of her salary.
The payout signals a tentative end to a tumultuous period for the beleagured department when it comes to leadership. By the time Kirkpatrick was fired in 2020, the department had gone through 11 chiefs over 21 years. Four were on the job within the span of nine days in 2016. Kirkpatrick was the first woman hired in the position and had support among the rank-and-file, but clashed with the police commission. She was replaced by interim police chief Susan Manheimer before current police chief LeRonne Armstrong was hired last year. Armstrong so far has tried to steady the department.
