Biden to host Obamas in September for White House portrait ceremony Trump shunned
Source: NBC
President Joe Biden will host former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama at the White House in early September for the unveiling of their official White House portraits, according to an Obama spokesperson.
The traditional East Room ceremony unveiling the Obamas portraits, usually a moment where the sitting president and the first lady fête their immediate predecessors, was put off while then-President Donald Trump was in office given the bitter, estranged relationship between the two men.
Because of the Covid pandemic, the event was further delayed after Biden took office last year. It's typically held indoors in the East Room of the White House.
The Obamas are scheduled to appear with Biden and first lady Jill Biden on Sept. 7, the Obama spokesperson said Thursday. The artists who painted the former first couple will also be revealed at that time, as has been tradition for presidential portrait unveilings since the ritual began decades ago.

(255,526 posts)Bill Clinton is the only POTUS I've ever seen in person. He came to the district to campaign for our Democratic Congressional candidate - not only is he a brilliant speaker, but I believe he was the reason for unseating a long time incumbent Republican.

(60,186 posts)My brother and I were at the White House, and we paused in front of the official Clinton portrait, and said, we GOTTA do this!
Obama was still president, and I didn't yet have a phone that could take good photos, so I posed, and he took the pic.
Bill Clinton is indeed a brilliant speaker. He owns the room the moment he steps up to the podium. I was sitting right in front of him at the Gridiron dinner in 1995, and if he had said he was about to declare war on the Duchy of Grand Fenwick, a number of the people there would probably have believed him before the others broke out in laughter.

(255,526 posts)And in this Republican-leaning district, it was SRO to see and hear an actual POTUS. His speech was brilliant and inspired the crowd, and he was gracious and friendly. The local paper had said that the incumbent Republican (now disgraced John Sweeney) could "have the job for life" if he wanted it. But I truly believe that President Clinton convinced the voters otherwise...

(1,029 posts)ceremony at some point in the first term - not that Biden WANTED to do it (and would have been quite happy if Trump turned the invite down), but he would extend the invite just to re-establish decorum and show that he was the better man; I think January 6 ended any possibility that this would happen in the first term.
