(CNN)US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expected to visit Taiwan as part of her tour of Asia, according to a senior Taiwanese government official and a US official, despite warnings from Biden administration officials, who are worried about China's response to such a high-profile visit. The stop -- the first for a US House speaker in 25 years -- is not currently on Pelosi's public itinerary and comes at a time when US-China relations are already at a low point. The Taiwanese official added that she is expected to stay in Taiwan overnight.
It is unclear when exactly Pelosi will land in Taipei. The US official added that Defense Department officials are working around the clock on monitoring any Chinese movements in the region and securing a plan to keep her safe. During a regular foreign ministry briefing Monday, China warned against the "egregious political impact" of Pelosi's planned visit to the self-governing island that China claims as a part of its territory and reiterated that its military "won't sit by idly" if Beijing feels its "sovereignty and territorial integrity" is being threatened.
"We would like to tell the US once again that China is standing by, and the Chinese People's Liberation Army will never sit idly by. China will take resolute responses and strong countermeasures to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity," Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters, when asked about the fallout from Pelosi leading a congressional delegation to Taipei. "As for what measures, if she dares to go, then let's wait and see," Zhao added.
Though China's military did not mention Taiwan, the People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theater Command said it would "bury incoming enemies" in a video posted online Monday showing off its weaponry and fighting tactics. "Firmly stand by and ready for the fighting command; Bury all incoming enemies," a message posted on Weibo said. National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications John Kirby said Monday that the Biden administration will support Pelosi on a trip to Taiwan.

Edit to add: In the past Nancy has been told where she can and cannot go on overseas visits and let's just say the conversation didn't go well for the guys who lecture Nancy. This goes back to Clinton days.

28 years ago, we traveled to Tiananmen Square to honor the courage & sacrifice of the students, workers & ordinary citizens who stood for the dignity & human rights that all people deserve. To this day, we remain committed to sharing their story with the world. #Tiananmen30

(47,436 posts)to visit during an upcoming trip to the Mideast.
That DOD official later told friends that Nancy gave him the worst dressing down he had ever received, he left the meeting quite rattled. This is a guy who regularly worked with the military, with very rough career army and marines types.
Basically Nancy told him she would go where ever the F she wanted to go.
Yes that Tiananmen Square visit was very courageous and must have infuriated Beijing. I visited that square about 15 years ago and before we arrived, the tour guide said she would lose her job if anyone in the group of Americans asked about "any activity" at that location.
She also told us that there would be plain clothes policemen there to check on us.
She was quite correct, several Chinese men in suits and ties did join our group during the tour. They just walked up to our group and stood with us until we left. We very much liked our tour guide, she was wonderful, so we kept our mouths shut so as not to cause her any trouble.
I should note that this was common in Beijing. It was obviously a high surveillance city.
Once you got out of that part of the country, the plain clothes cops were not as prevalent.

(129,522 posts)(her dad was there until she was about 8/9 before he ran for mayor of Baltimore), she has a deep comfort level with her chamber and a feel for how far she can go, If anything, I also think that a lot of this is "saber rattling" and theater because Beijing doesn't just go by what one "says" but what one "does", and right now, their MFN status is very much intact, whether she shows up there or not.

(47,436 posts)I have the same thoughts about Nancy. She had a very strong male mentor.
Saw it all first hand. How to wield power in a male dominated world.
She was never intimidated and knows when to compromise, when to hammer away.
I would tweak your comment a bit about China. They are really quite different from Americans in a number of ways. They are a very formal people, and very much adhere to dramatic symbolism and presentation as a way of communication. Symbolic behavior means a great deal to them.
Also right now China is dead set on becoming the most powerful superpower in the world.
So symbolic displays of power are extremely important to them.

(129,522 posts)so I'm sure she had to be tough to deal with that (and was probably also doted on ).
And do agree about China and they are not the only ones who do that. Many African countries have and will do the same - strongly declare sovereignty and superiority in order to maintain position in the geo-political power structure. But that doesn't preclude them from avoiding burning bridges either, so they learn to step lightly and then thrust.
This is why I have mentioned in any China-Russia threads, that although you see this "cooperation on the surface", each country has its sights on domination of their part of the world and beyond. So they are not at all "besties", but are taking advantage of situations that bolster their own positions and goals.

(47,436 posts)Had older brothers who protected her and doted on her. But she most likely joined in with them and their activities as much as possible.
I have noticed that when there is one girl in a household of male siblings, the girl may end up socialized somewhat as a male because she very much wants to play with her older brothers and their friends. And so must join in the male activities, language and norms.
This is really helpful in the future, especially in a male dominated career field. She knows the club rules. And she can hold her own and not be intimidated.
And if her mother is a girly girl type, the girl with also learn to align with females and understands those rules as well. So she can flip back and forth between the two groups quite easily.
So we can see Nancy presenting as very female, quite professional, but clearly feminine.
Which is very acceptable to the American public. But then in private I guess she can peel paint off of walls with her language when someone crosses her. Sounds good to me!
I believe that China will at some point go beyond power rhetoric and make a show of force.
China will be a global superpower, it is going to have a very powerful military, and is going to flex its muscles soon to make a statement.

(4,554 posts)The US does not answer to China. If we were to curtail and modify a state visit based on what dictatorships demand, then it makes us look weak.
Nancy doesnt take crap from anyone.

(855 posts)it's funny how this visit got supercharged into importance by China and the international attention. If she had just came unannounced then left I bet everyone would have forgotten, now it feels like an important event. But it's not like this was out of the left field, Pelosi indicated she was doing a visit back in April before having to cancel her Asia trip over catching COVID.
They turned what otherwise wouldn't have been anything more than a symbolic (as opposed to strategic) visit into big news, and it looks like now they face quite a dilemma: escalate and risk a major miscalculation or back down and lose face.
The big question is why. One analysis is that Xi's position is not as secure as believed in the West. Another is that Xi's detractors set him up by playing up the potential visit and forcing him to take a hardline stance that will weaken him further.
It has parallels with the Lithuanian trade office 🤣 no one would have cared, and they managed to piss off the EU trying to intimidate the mighty Lithuanian empire, what a bunch of strategic geniuses playing 4D chess and looking 100 years ahead while stepping in every turd along the way

WTH, come on. Why give Xi a push toward that POS Putin. I'm worried if there's any problems it's going to detract, take-away from the help we've promised the Ukrainian people.

(129,522 posts)There are 535 members of Congress. The United States is China's biggest trade partner. Much of the supply chain problems originated there.
And per the Constitution and Civics 101 -
Section 1.
All legislative powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives.
(snip)
Section 8.
The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the debts and provide for the common defense and general welfare of the United States; but all duties, imposts and excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;
(snip)
To regulate commerce with foreign nations, and among the several states, and with the Indian tribes;
To establish a uniform rule of naturalization, and uniform laws on the subject of bankruptcies throughout the United States;
To coin money, regulate the value thereof, and of foreign coin, and fix the standard of weights and measures;
(snip)--And
To make all laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into execution the foregoing powers, and all other powers vested by this Constitution in the government of the United States, or in any department or officer thereof.

Just as Biden called for suspending "normal trade relations" (the new name for MFN) with Russia due to their war with Ukraine (which requires Congressional approval), Congress continually evaluates The U.S.'s trade partners, with the guidance of the President, to determine if changes need to be made. Right now, the Biden's administration is evaluating all the tariffs that were put in place against China by the previous administration.
At present, China has what is dubbed a "permanent Most Favored Nation/normal trade" status but that can change with Congressional approval and the stroke of a pen.
The U.S., with several million federal employees can walk and chew gum at the same time.

(12,449 posts)If we let China dictate to us who can or cannot visit Taiwan, or any country for that matter, then that only emboldens them the next time.
China has no right to tell our Pols. if they can or cannot visit Taiwan.
