NFL suspends Deshaun Watson 6 games for personal conduct violations
Source: Yahoo Sports
The NFL suspended Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson for six games on Monday for violating the leagues personal conduct policy.
The decision was rendered in response to the NFLs investigation of multiple women who filed civil lawsuits against Watson before he settled with 23 of them; one of those suits remains. The women, whom Watson hired for massages, accused the QB of sexual misconduct or sexual assault.
Watson will be eligible to return to the Browns in Week 7.
As part of its probe, the leagues investigators spoke to at least 10 of the women who originally filed litigation against Watson. A source told Yahoo Sports the NFL obtained information from the pretrial process in those civil lawsuits, none of which was sealed by presiding judges. The pretrial process included Watson sitting for multiple depositions and ultimately concluded on June 30.

Thirty women. . .six games. Ladies, the NFL doesn't care about you. Microcosm of the US in general these days.
Don't read the comments unless you want to read things about thugs and "black privilege," whatever the hell that is.

6 games is totally inadequate.
Boo NFL.

(70,483 posts)... the threat of physical violence had to have been there. 1/2 a dozen games is nothing and I am sure that the 23
women who got paid off had to sign NDAs. Lots of NFL players have histories of sexual assaults see Brett Rothenberg.

(5,857 posts)that the NFL appeals the punishment and Goodell sits him out a couple of seasons.
That said, the NFL (for whatever reason) only "pressed charges" on their best four cases. The rest of them don't matter for this purpose so I hope they got a good settlement.

(412 posts)The Browns had to know this was the case why else would they sign him to a $230 million contract if he was going to be suspended for the entire year.
Stinks to high heaven.
genxlib
(5,524 posts)The contract is particularly backloaded where there is relatively limited money for this year and huge sums in future years.
https://www.si.com/nfl/browns/news/deshaun-watson-contract-details
So it was all negotiated that way so that he would not lose a high percentage of the contract even if he lost the entire year.
There is no way of knowing whether the Browns had an inkling of the potential suspension but it doesn't impact their financial investment. They were in for 99%+ of the contract either way.

(6,103 posts)With some luck, Watson will have to pay out big bucks to these masseueses.
I'm not defending the scumbags within the NFL or any big business. Most players have their own regular massage therapists and/or masseuses, so why would Watson need to go through 30+ of them? yeah I can guess! He's guilty, though no video evidence ever surfaced, to my knowledge.
If this were true, "Ladies, the NFL doesn't care about you." then there would have been no punishment against Watson at all, right? Correct me if I'm wrong. Please be honest here. No punishment is no punishment.
Technically, this all happened outside of NFL business, so why are they obligated to sanction Watson anyway? Only because player conduct is written into their contracts and it hurts the NFL's public image. The NFL may say that they are trying to protect victims of sexual assault but I doubt that is reason # 1.
And it isn't just the NFL or a male / female injustice.
Big BUSINESS doesn't care about any little people.
To be sure, the NFL keeps adding woman referees, trainers, team presidents and owners. Do they care about women or are these examples just qualified sports personnel getting a deserved position?
What I don't get is why aren't GOP women defending ALL other women everywhere?

(6,103 posts)The buzz is that the NFL may find this suspension too light.
The NFL might appeal and ask for more games to be suspended.

(503 posts)Its this judges first year, she has the credentials, and its a woman judge making a judgment on female victims. If the NFL rejects her ruling, it will have the appearance that shes not capable of making correct judgements. Not a good look for the league to undercut her. And she was specifically hired to take the pressure off the Commissioner and owners.
