WASHINGTON (AP) -- A CIA drone strike has killed al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahri in Afghanistan, according to five people familiar with the matter.
Current and former officials began hearing Sunday afternoon that al-Zawahri had been killed in a drone strike, but the administration delayed releasing the information until his death could be confirmed, according to one person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the matter.
White House officials declined to confirm al-Zawahri was killed but noted in a statement that the United States conducted a "successful" counterterrorism operation against a significant al-Qaida target, adding that "there were no civilian casualties."
President Joe Biden is expected to discuss further details of the operation in a 7:30 p.m. EDT address to the nation. Biden planned to speak from the balcony off the White House Blue Room as he remains in isolation in the residence while he continues to test positive for COVID-19.

A BFD since it's not one of the many "2nd in commands". It's basically the equivalent of Osama Bin Laden.
President Biden will be giving an address this evening (AP corrected their EST to be EDT for the address timing).

(23,882 posts)In addition to the current MSB fucker, there are still lots of that family (and others) that were involved in the 9/11 attack.
I would guess that the US and others know much more about what really happened, and who was planning it than has been revealed. Bin Laden was a convenient target. Much more convenient than a ruling despot who had huge oil reserves and a friend of the Bushes.

(3,436 posts)A) How will the rethugs frame this as an unnecessary show of power, possibly upsetting allies in the region? After all, he hasn't attacked us in YEARS (I mean, just like Khashoggi, nobody talks about it anymore), and does anyone know who he is, really? AND WHAT ABOUT HUNTER BIDEN'S LAPTOP?
B) How will the mainstream media manage to turn this into a HUGE mistake by Biden?

(7,923 posts)If it is OK for the US to take out someone in a foreign country using a high tech remote controlled drone, what is to stop Putin from doing the same with the leader of other countries - Ukraine, for instance?
Careful of the precedent you set!

(169,761 posts)He was head of a terrorist organization.
And no (legit) "head of state" of one country would "take out" the "head of state" of another. I.e., Putin is not going to "take out" Zelenskyy.
The closest the U.S. has gotten to that type of thing was most likely stirring the pot that lead to the death of Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gaddafi, as examples, by people in their own countries. Otherwise we tend to do that "rendition" thing (like Manuel Noriega) after doing a trial and then going through the motions. Alternately, we have a soft spot for helping "heads of state in exile" (see the Shah of Iran).
