China halts climate, military ties over Pelosi Taiwan visit
Source: ABC News
China on Friday said it is canceling or suspending dialogue with the United States on a range of issues from climate change to military relations and anti-drug efforts in retaliation for a visit this week to Taiwan by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The measures, which come amid cratering relations between Beijing and Washington, are the latest in a promised series of steps intended to punish the U.S. for allowing the visit to the island it claims as its own territory, to be annexed by force if necessary. China on Thursday launched threatening military exercises in six zones just off Taiwan's coasts that it says will run through Sunday. Missiles have also been fired over Taiwan, defense officials told state media. China routinely opposes the self-governing island having its own contacts with foreign governments, but its response to the Pelosi visit has been unusually vociferous. The Foreign Ministry said dialogue between U.S. and Chinese regional commanders and defense department heads would be canceled, along with talks on military maritime safety. 1. What a bunch of infantile jackasses. I suspect they are blowing this out of proportion because
the Chinese economy is faltering, and are using this as a distraction

8. That's what I was thinking. Blame the U.S. for their economic troubles. I'd think the pople in China
are getting pretty fed up of all this crap.
The anti-privacy, strict control, re-education camps among other F'd up things has got to be taking a toll on the society. |

2. Which just proves they were never really commited to them -- just waiting for the first excuse
to back out without "losing face". Oops, doesn't work. China looks like whiny two-year olds. Face count: zero.

3. Time to pull back as many manufacturing plants ...
...as possible. The Chinese are not reliable partners, and they steal any IP they can get their hands on. Their labor is cheap and their products are cheap.

They have allies in most of Asia, Africa and much of S. America.

18. They may have allies,
but are they willing to come to their aid militarily?
Probably not and they couldn't match the US or it's allies in the region. |

19. The U.S. can not beat China in an Asian war.
They could not beat small countries in Asia like N. Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, or Syria. We lost about 100,000 troops dead in those conflicts and none were a victory. China would destroy the U.S. in an Asian war.

20. Well,
we have a difference of opinion.
BTW, we won every big battle in Vietnam, we withdrew our forces because it lost the support politically and domestically, and I disagree with losing in Korea, we kept the Norks from taking over the South, that is a win IMO. Let's hope we don't have to find out who's right or wrong. |

21. On Vietnam, what you said does mean there was an alternative where we would win
Even McNamara said in FOG OF WAR that he knew in 1968 that we could not win. The war lost support because we lost 68,000 American lives and it was a quagmire. The only way to "win" was to stay there for decades or maybe forever.
Are you seriously blaming the people who argued for ending the war? |

23. You completely misinterpreted my post.
I in no way am blaming anyone for our withdrawal from Vietnam, all I pointed out was that we didn't lose any of the big battles fought in VN, but we did lose the will to stay and fight, both politically and domestically, which, IMO, was the right thing to do, we should have never been there in the first place, and this is coming from someone who did 2 tours there.
On the Korean war, we did win as we prevented N. Korea from taking over the South and turning it into a bigger N. Korea and all the tyranny associated with that. |

24. I read things that were not there, but I think we are in agreement that we could not
win a conclusive victory unless we were willing to stay there in force winning more battles and losing more lives.

25. Absolutely,
it was a civil war that we had no business being involved in, and the French defeat at Dien Bien Phu in 1954 should have been a warning to us, but we didn't listen and the rest is history.

13. So China is throwing a hissy fit because Pelosi had the temerity to visit Taiwan. It's just
blackmail designed to isolate Taiwan from the rest of the world to make their conquest of the island easier.

16. china talks
If China is going to stop talks and cooperation over something as minor as a visit by a politician, we were never going to get anything out of "talks and cooperation" anyway.
Because they'd always stop whenever they weren't getting exactly what they wanted. |
