White House summoned Chinese ambassador to condemn provocations after Pelosi's Taiwan visit
Source: CNN
The White House summoned China's ambassador on Thursday to condemn China's "irresponsible" military activities near Taiwan as tensions continue to escalate in the region following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the island this week. "After China's actions overnight, we summoned PRC Ambassador Qin Gang to the White House to demarche him about the PRC's provocative actions. We condemned the PRC's military actions, which are irresponsible, at odds with our long-standing goal of maintaining peace and stability and across the Taiwan Strait," National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications John Kirby said in a statement to CNN. The decision to summon Qin came after days of warnings to China not to escalate tensions in the region following the speaker's visit to the self-governing island, which the Chinese Communist Party regards as its territory despite having never controlled it. It represents a shift from the White House's attitude about the trip before it occurred, when officials privately tried to warn Pelosi over the possible consequences of the visit and how it could harm US-China relations. The meeting was first reported by The Washington Post. In the days since Pelosi left Taiwan, China has taken multiple bellicose steps, both diplomatically and militarily. China is facing an debt and banking crisis of major proportions. A conflict or war could be exactly what they need to distract their population from problems at home.

1. This has been the first line from the US playbook for the last 60 years.
"A conflict or war could be exactly what they need to distract their population from problems at home."

2. Xi has to save face. Not sure how far that goes as the "election" is coming up.

6. Starting a war could backfire. The death toll will be enormous on both sides.

7. No argument here. Scary proposition. Gorbachov said "it seems like the world is preparing for war"
about 5 years ago. He knows more than we do and that was pretty chilling.

8. They own so many U.S. Treasury notes that it could collapse our economy. That's what I read
years ago. Hope it's not tested.

9. Selling them would hurt their economy too. Japan owns more
China invests heavily in U.S. Treasury bonds to keep its export prices lower.
China focuses on export-led growth to help generate jobs. To keep its export prices low, China must keep its currency—the renminbi (RMB)—low compared to the U.S. dollar. China chooses U.S. Treasuries to invest in, versus real estate, stocks, and other countries' debt, because of their safety and stability. I don't care as much about toys and stuff like that, but critical things and ANYTHING of a national security issue needs to be either made HERE or in a more friendly country |

10. that giant sucking sound happened and it dramatically changed America. We still make weapons.
Lost a lot of other industries though. And lots of folks got rich doing it. We shouldn't have ripped up much of our rail system either, IMHO.

4. For anybody else who needs to look up, demarche
A line of action; move; countermove; maneuver, especially in diplomacy; or a formal diplomatic representation (diplomatic correspondence) of the official position, views or wishes on a subject from one government to another government or intergovernmental organization.

5. Taiwan scrambles its fighter jets as Chinese war planes conduct simulated attack, officials say
Chinese ships and planes rehearsed an attack on Taiwan on Saturday, Taiwanese military officials said, prompting the island nation to scramble its jets, per Reuters.
Taiwan's defense ministry said 20 Chinese aircraft and 14 warships conducted missions around the Taiwan Strait on Saturday afternoon, Reuters reported. The ministry said that 14 of the 20 Chinese aircraft crossed the median line — a 110-mile-long strait that acts as an unofficial buffer between China and Taiwan. Taiwanese jets scrambled, the ministry said, and the army also broadcast a warning and put shore-based missiles on stand-by, Reuters said. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/taiwan-scrambles-its-fighter-jets-as-chinese-war-planes-conduct-simulated-attack-officials-say/ar-AA10nwS0 |
