FBI executes search warrant at Trump's Mar-a-Lago in document investigation

(CNN)The FBI executed a search warrant on Monday at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, as part of an investigation into the handling of presidential documents, including classified documents, that may have been brought to Florida, three people familiar with the situation say.
Trump confirmed that FBI agents were at Mar-a-Lago and said "they even broke into my safe." "My beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents," he said in a statement Monday evening. The former President was not in Florida at the time that the search warrant was executed.
The search began early Monday morning and law enforcement personnel appeared to be focused on the area of the club where Trump's offices and personal quarters are, according to a person familiar with the matter. The Justice Department declined to comment to CNN, as did the White House. A White House official said it was not notified about the search. CNN has reached out to the FBI for comment.
The Justice Department has two known active investigations connected to the former President, one on the effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election and January 6, 2021, and the other involving the handling of classified documents. The National Archives, charged with collecting and sorting presidential material, has previously said at least 15 boxes of White House records were recovered from Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort -- including some that were classified. In April and May, aides to Trump at Mar-a-Lago were interviewed by the FBI as part of the probe into the handling of presidential records, according to a source familiar with the matter.

(411 posts)This is a search related to the classified documents taken illegally. Weisselberg wouldn't have any access to or knowledge of that. If anyone flipped, it's someone inside the administration who had knowledge of those docs. Meadows could be the one. Could be someone else. It might be that no one flipped.
I (as a none lawyer) would think the KNOWN presence of classified docs at Mar A Lardass would be enough to sustain a search warrant application all on it's own. The reason this hasn't happened sooner was just chasing down the leads to see who was involved. A search warrant requires the applicant to name the place to be searched and the items/information being searched for to be named. You don't tip off where the investigation currently stands or where it is going while valid evidence and leads are still coming in from more stealthy sources unless you think that info is about to be destroyed. Usually the better play is to keep things on the down low and let the targets get complacent while you run down every lead.
Caveat: I am not a lawyer. I don't play one on TV. I didn't sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night. The opinions expressed above are solely my own and are not necessarily the views of this network.

I am assuming that they've had problems getting all of the classified documents back is because he kept them to sell them. We know he's got a lot of loans coming due with no way to pay them. And no one wants to lend him money anymore.

(164,727 posts)they gotta have quite a specific description of what needed to be seized and that a simple subpoena would not be sufficient to potentially halt a crime-in-progress.
There was also one of them this evening, that suggested it could have been an "insider" who may have provided some info about what may have been at the premises (including what might have been in the safe).
I retired from an agency who used DOJ to do seizures for us and we had to work with our own agency lawyers and DOJ folks to list off which items needed to be seized and there would be a team going with U.S. Marshals and DOJ folks to execute the seizure.

Trump White House boxes final days Jan 2021
(snip)
The Post and The Times reported that some of the items in the boxes included letters to Trump from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un which Trump described as beautiful "love letters," a note from former President Barack Obama, a map on which Trump drew with a Sharpie to mark a possible hurricane path to Alabama, and at least one piece of clothing. Gifts that made their way from the White House to Mar-a-Lago include a plaque and replica of a piece of the US-Mexico border wall, a signature Trump 2016 campaign pledge, which was previously displayed in the private dining room next to the Oval Office, the Post said. A miniature replica of Air Force One, decorated the way Trump wanted to repaint and redesign it, went from being displayed in the Oval Office to a prominent spot in Mar-a-Lago's lobby.
The Democratic leaders of two congressional committees, Rep. Carolyn Maloney and Sen. Gary Peters, have said they will open investigations of Trump's potential violations of federal records laws. The Archives has also asked the Department of Justice to investigate whether Trump broke the law in taking official White House items, the Post reported.
Representatives for Trump did not immediately return Insider's request for comment. The latest reporting isn't the first time the Trump administration has faced scrutiny over missing and undisclosed gifts. Politico reported in August 2021, for example, that over 20 types of gifts were missing from the State Department's gift vault after Trump left office.
The Department's internal watchdog is investigating, among other missing gifts, whether Trump political appointees stole gift bags intended for foreign attendees of the 2020 G7 summit, which was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, upon leaving office The New York Times reported in October 2021. The White House also failed to disclose gifts of what appeared to be cheetah and tiger fur robes given to Trump by the Saudi Royal Family until Trump's last day in office, when the White House turned them over to the General Services Administration, The Times reported last year. The US Fish and Wildlife Service later determined the robes were not, in fact, made of real tiger or cheetah fur, but had been dyed.
(snip)
https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-aides-worried-of-gifts-being-packed-up-during-white-house-move-out-wapo-2022-2
The bolded parrt of the above may be what triggered what happened yesterday.
I would hazard to guess that actual documents might have been kept in the boxes except for a select few that criminals like Flynn would know what they represented, and much of the artifacts may have actually been displayed around the residence and might have been part of what were removed in the seizure.
It's entirely possible that many promo photos of the inside of the M-A-L resort, included views of rooms that contained items on display that were stolen at move-out (or even before), and those objects may have been included on the seizure list.

(19,029 posts)And the DOJ has a policy not to do anything that could affect an election 90 days before so thats probably why it happened right now.
The DOJ will be quiet until the election is over but afterwards it could get FUN!

(164,727 posts)Apparently these OLC memos were drafted during and in reference to Presidential elections years.
2022 is NOT a Presidential election year and when it comes to criminal proceedings, they are expected to be "quiet" because the statute requires it - particularly when it comes to grand juries.

Sounds like a threat to me. Maybe Mccarthy should be investigated.

I'll bet he sold them to the highest bidder.

(8,156 posts)What are the odds after over a year and a half, any incriminating evidence would not have been sold, hidden or destroyed?
What are the odds that someone like Hannity, or confidante tied to the DOJ for instance, didn't counsel and provide him with assistance months ago, or even as recent as last week?
We've all read about stupid thieves leaving identitifying information at the scene of the crime, but this case has nearly two years heads up that was a likely event. Precious time to sell, hide and destroy.
I would be shocked if this raid at this location produced much of any value.
My reality check says, if we're banking on anything found at the florida fun house, we'll likely be quite disappointed.

(164,727 posts)because he had "people" (including "The Generals®" ) who managed it, as well as the revolving door CoS's (Priebus, Kelly, Mulvaney, Meadows), the cabinet, the NSC people (like Flynn early on), Jarvanka, etc., and the various West Wing aides.

(8,156 posts)the estate. Bomb Shelters, fortified in concrete and steel and used for storage, currently functioning offices etc.
that's a factor I had not previously known. The Bomb Shelters (more than one, and other florida and ny properties) changes the possibilities in my mind.. potentially.

Pretty much describes the "ordinary tourist day" at the Capitol on Jan 6th.
