Explosions rock area of Russian airbase in Crimea

Source: CNN

(CNN) A series of large explosions went off in the area of a Russian military airbase in the annexed Ukrainian territory of Crimea on Tuesday, with footage from the scene showing large plumes of smoke billowing into the air.
The Russian defense ministry said the blasts had been caused by detonated aviation ammunition, Russian state media RIA Novosti reported.
"Around 3:20 p.m., several aviation munitions detonated on the territory of the airfield 'Saki' near the settlement of Novofedorivka," the ministry said in the statement, according to RIA Novosti.

Ambulance crews and an air ambulance were sent to the site of the explosions, according to the health ministry of the region.

Oleg Kryuchkov, adviser to the head of the Crimean region -- which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014 -- confirmed several explosions had occurred near the village of Novofedorivka. On his Telegram channel, Kryuchkov said: "So far, I can only confirm the fact of several explosions in the Novofedorivka area. I ask everyone to wait for official messages."

"Official message" coming up: "Several random airbase personnel were smoking in close proximity to various explosive storage areas at the same time and accidentally set off a number of explosions within 30 minutes of each other. No evidence of embarrassingly successful Ukrainian assault on the airbase was found. Obviously, an unfortunate accident."

Russia's defence ministry said an explosion at a Russian military airbase in Crimea on Tuesday had been caused by a detonation of aviation ammunition, and that there had been no casualties, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

It said there had been no attack, and no military equipment had been damaged.

Kinda like how their flagship cruiser went down due to bad weather, and not at all because the Ukrainian military blew it up.

Sounds serious, Mr. Putin. Good luck.

Those damn soldiers need to stop walking through ammunition storage facilities while smoking and carrying a five gallon fuel can in each hand.

One way or the other this is good news for the Ukrainians and bad news for Vlad.

Could the explosion be not a deliberate act by either Ukraine or a disgruntled Russian, but rather an accident resulting from old and/or improperly stored munitions?

Maybe Ukraine should claim some adjacent Russian land, just for a buffer from the Moscow murderers.

I signed up in the early, early days of DU, but I have taken some long breaks here and there. I credit the breaks for retaining my sanity.

I found it via Bartcop (but only registered as a user in 2016).

I get what you're saying about having to take breaks. I've had to do it myself, especially since Bart died. If you don't step away from the news/negativity for a while, it wears you down.

We were doing a political access TV show in Houston after Bush stole the 2000 election from Gore, and were always giving him props. He came down to Houston from OK for an in-studio interview. Loved that guy.

I don't understand how newscasters can even read the unrelenting bad news and not have a nervous breakdown.

But the tide seems to be turning!!!

I'm jealous.

Bart/Terry and I had some email exchanges over the years. I wish I could have gone to one of the "Bart-fests" and met him in person.

A shot of Chinaco in memory of Bart! 🥃
