Donald Trump on Monday claimed his passports were 'stolen' in the FBI raid at Mar-a-Lago last week, which would mean he could not leave the country.

He called it an 'assault on a political opponent.'

'Wow. In the raid by the FBI or Mar-a-Lago, they stole my three Passports (one expired), along with everything else. This is an assault on a political opponent at a level never before seen in our country. Third World,' he wrote on his Truth Social social media account.

He likely has a regular blue passport issued to U.S. citizens and a red 'diplomatic' passport issued for official government travel. He would have received a diplomatic passport as president.

But, without a legal passport, Trump would not be able to travel outside of the United States.

In my agency, I had a blue one (tourist) and an official red one (abroad on official government business). I carried both while traveling.

In the event of a situation (hijacking, terriridm, etc) we were to hide our red passport and just use the blue one.

By the way- a diplomatic passport is a third variety- not blue, and not red. Diplomatic passports were black- issued only to State Department personnel. supposed to get you out of trouble. They were different than red ones. Diplomatic passports are black.

If he had a red one- he is no longer President, so it should be expired.

We literally had to courier our passports from the field office to the HQ Travel office and then they would courier the State Department passport to us (and vice versa). We also had badges (credentials) in addition to the PIV card so that provided additional ID. We had staff going to places like China and India.

If anything, any government issue ANYTHING should be "expired" (cancelled) once you leave - whether leaving office or an agency! And they are supposed to hole-punch the old personal passports (which I know they will actually return to you like that when you get a new personal one).

I don't know too much about warrants, but I have heard they can be chaotic. My hunch is the FBI didn't through every file etc while they were at Mar a Lago and it's possible that passports could have been mixed with other papers.

The main reasons a passport would be confiscated are on the basis of a valid unsealed federal warrant of arrest, a federal or state criminal court order, a condition of parole or probation forbidding departure from the United States (or the jurisdiction of the court), or a request for extradition. Any such request needs to include a copy of the valid unsealed arrest warrant or criminal court order. AFAIK none of those things have happened.

It's entirely possible the FBI could have seized them and they just won't make that information public. Remember, they tried to keep the search quiet until he shot off his dumb mouth.

The first passport is his blue one, the same as millions of Americans carry. No problem there.

The others are a red official passport and a black diplomatic one, which is the expired one.

Think about all the times Jimmy Carter has gone overseas to supervise an election, or Bill Clinton has gone on some sort of a goodwill tour. Those things are done at the request of the State Department, so they’re acting as government officials.

When a president is the incumbent, his black passport bears the inscription “the bearer is the President of the United States.” This passport expires when your term does. If you’re re-elected, they issue you a new one. This passport is only used when you travel on official business, so if Trump wanted to play his Scottish golf courses and not do any presidential work he’d use his red one.

At the end of your time in office you get a new diplomatic passport inscribed with “the bearer is a former President of the United States.” Every five years after that, you pay a visit to the State Department and receive a new one so you can continue your elder statesman work. Since Trump hauled ass before January 20 he never got it changed out, and it seems apparent the State Department didn’t chase him down.

The real question is why he didn’t bring a passport with him to Bedminster. You’d think he’d want to play golf in Scotland.
