US to hold trade talks with Taiwan, island drills military

Source: AP

By JOHNSON LAI and JOE McDONALD

HUALIEN, Taiwan (AP) — The U.S. government will hold trade talks with Taiwan in a sign of support for the island democracy that China claims as its own territory, prompting Beijing to warn Thursday it will take action if necessary to “safeguard its sovereignty.”

The announcement of trade talks comes after Beijing fired missiles into the sea to intimidate Taiwan after U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi this month became the highest-ranking American official to visit the island in 25 years.

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s government criticized the planned talks as a violation of its stance that Taiwan has no right to foreign relations. It warned Washington not to encourage the island to try to make its de facto independence permanent, a step Beijing says would lead to war.

“China firmly opposes this,” Ministry of Commerce spokesperson Shu Jueting said. She called on Washington to “fully respect China’s core interests.”

The CCP doesn't care about anyone else except the 5% of China that belongs to it.

The people in China, mostly, don't care about this. It's only the CCP and their nationalist water carriers.

Taiwan is roughly the size of Lake Michigan. A little shorter and wider.

Hualien is far from Taipei and Taoyuan Counties and relatively close to Tainan and Kaohsiung.

Hualien is a seaside city. Eastern Taiwan is low mountains.

President Carter broke diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1979. That has been the position of every administration since then.

We should stop selling their products in every Walmart and chain store in the US?

80% of the products sold in Walmart are made in China. Other chain stores throughout the US also sell major quantities of Chinese products. It's like we give China money with one hand and tell them no you can't use that money with the other hand.

If you don't want China to buy weapons and use their military against Taiwan, or join in war games with Russia, you shouldn't be handing them over so much wealth.

But then develop better supply chains that don't rely on totalitarian regimes to be successful. Or that don't rely on cheap labor from totalitarian countries to make your products.

Before China, there were other suppliers. It's not necessary to our economy unless we allow corporations to make it necessary because free trade, globalization and capitalism.

But you can't have your cake and eat it to. You can't make China your major trading partner then object to their totalitarian behavior, that you fund.

You know the American people like their cheap Chinese made crap too much for that to happen.

It would impact my company, but it would be worth it to me to not deliver to WalMart, there are plenty of other well paying loads to be had.

See, we agree on this.

Listen, America just cut off most abortions to hundreds of millions of American citizens for no other reason then god. That decision will cost women, families, doctors, hospitals and health insurers a lot, a lot of money.

So let's cut off all Chinese imports for no other reason then patriotism. If they can sell the one, they can sell the other.

China made their wealth from exporting to the US through Walmart. Cutting them off will hurt them a lot too.

Just saying being an imperialist power sometimes costs. You have to make decisions on what you want more. Free trade with China or Taiwan's autonomy and no war games with Russia.

We always hear "costs". Of course it costs more to bring everything back here. We should try. But if that doesnt happen it can still be taken OUT of china. Plenty of other low cost countries can be used.
We must stop sourcing critical items from our enemy

I email companies that I WOULD buy from if they were out of China
Just the other day I received an actual response from a company with mfg in China, Vietnam & Columbia. They said that they are currently in the process of trying to eliminate their reliance on China. I thanked them for their response & told them to advertise when they do.
