Washington mayor declares public emergency over migrant arrivals from Texas, Arizona

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser on Thursday declared a public emergency over buses of migrants sent by Republican governors from the U.S.-Mexico border states of Texas and Arizona.

Bowser, a Democrat, issued an order to support arriving migrants by creating a new Office of Migrant Affairs and will devote $10 million to launch the office. Bowser said she would seek reimbursement from the federal government.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has sent more than 7,600 migrants to Washington, D.C., since April in an effort to push responsibility for border crossers to Democrats, including U.S. President Joe Biden. Arizona as of mid-August had sent about 1,500. Texas has also sent migrants to New York City and Chicago.

Bowser's office called the busing a "political stunt."

When someone tries to limit immigration it is a national issue, the rest of the time 4 states are expected to carry the vast majority of the load.

Maybe every state should expect a proportional number of the new immigrants every year, give them the funding and assistance and they can absorb them into their populations rather than expecting the 4 border states to carry the majority of the load.

explain to them that dumping all of them in Chicago, NY, etc. is a bad idea. Let them choose where to go and by what means, train or bus. Don't let Republicans continue to make this a big stunt at their expense.

Immigrants are a blessing. I am sure the DC has been having staffing shortages like everyone else. The Mayor should look to align needs with bodies.

If they can't find them all work and safe affordable housing, partner up with blue cities to deal with overflows. AZ, and TX are really doing themselves a disservice. US population is in decline without immigration, and red assholes shouldn't benefit from people they hate.

I tend to think that the people being bussed to Washington won't have a lot of technical / white collar skills or experience.

But hey, I bet a lot of businesses in blue states would love to have some enthusiastic new employees who are willing to learn.

There is a home in this country for those willing to work and develop. I personally know dozens of irregular migrants. They are hardworking, intelligent people, who do amazing things with very little.

not just asylum from violence or economically impoverished refugees. Spreading out the masses that do arrive for new starts in our country isn't, per se, a bad thing, is it? Of course, Gov Abbot is a GOP bigot who can't be bothered with any solutions to the Lady Liberty's "wretched" from elsewhere, though I'd call this a political stunt as well if he can't negotiate with other governors and mayors so all can be prepared for the hospitality and safety necessary. Rapidly adding to the population is a recipe for problems that will, in a few, likely get worse even within our own states--yeah, I mean climate change refugees.

I know Joe and Secretary Blinkin, already have so much on their plates already, but immigration policies do need to be approached with some better and more realistic changes to encourage citizenship for those admitted. One can't have men, women, youth, and children ill, homeless and purposeless on the streets that our own citizens also make life-threatening and dangerous places. I've always as an adult lived in diverse communities, enjoying the heritage and skills all bring. I'm only a 3rd generation American, but, for sure, democracy is a tricky thing to keep, especially where objective and subjective issues without timely solutions exist that seem to want to destroy it, isn't it?
