Graham Proposes 15-Week Abortion Ban, Seeking to Unite Republicans
Source: New York Times
Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina introduced legislation on Tuesday that would institute a federal ban on abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, moving to unite the Republican Party behind a position before midterm elections in which abortion rights have become a potent issue.
There is no chance that Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York and the majority leader, would allow such a bill to receive a vote on the floor. But Mr. Grahams proposal was an effort to politically insulate Republicans from voter backlash after the Supreme Court ended the constitutional right to abortion in June.
It was a stark reversal from just weeks ago, when top Republicans including Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the minority leader, signaled that they were unlikely to pursue a nationwide abortion ban after the courts decision...

I've seen a photo that was posted that shows him making this announcement--surrounded by women (one of them a non-white woman). He couldn't possibly think that he's convincing anyone by having these women stand with him, could he?

(33,643 posts)With VERY liberal definitions of what constitutes 'danger' ... and that would END this friggin' debate forever ... AND there was something in the bill that makes birth control basically free, AND it did away with any state requirements for parental permission, I might support it.
Problem is, that scenario will certainly never happen with a GQP-sponsored bill.

Is that an extreme reaction and I don't have a right to the thought being I don't have a dick?
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)So I suppose your proposal has some utility towards that goal
But I have to ask ... are you are a female with no desire to be in the presence of a dick for the rest of your lifetime?
Cause if you want to give all females the power to get any guy's dick chopped off of him just based on their word ... pretty good chance you'd never see one again.
But if you never care to, then I understand.
The World could probably use less dicks if I'm honest

Overturning RvW blew up in their face because they no longer had a fear tool to use. This is an attempt to bring the crazy base back in line. Hopefully enough sane people vote to put these idiots in their place.

(6,115 posts)Jeebus, what a moron. Propose an outright ban right before the midterms, right when America is livid that women's rights to our own bodies are stripped away.
What's more, the rape exception for minors only applies if the doctor gets documentation from law enforcement reporting a rape. Republicans want to make it the law that 10-year-olds are presumed to have consented to sex.
Just fucking brilliant ... for Dems.

This was just a man in denial demanding the Republican party not give up on him.

(8,812 posts)allow some kind of restriction after that? Does this start a conversation that results in restoration of right to choose up until a certain point and under some circumstances later?
Can dems, who hold the floor, hijack the legislation...Or is this just doomed from the start?

(38,726 posts)Very good for our side. Not good for the republican side.
Lindsey is much too stupid to know that his bill is a great advantage to our side. (and for women's rights)
...Making this an issue in the next election is NOT good for ..."THEM"...and it is good for "US"
..I guess that Lindsey doesn't know that women want the right to their bodies, and their decision to have
babies or not to have babies. Oh, one more idea, "Women Vote." is that right?
Something about the ...."19 Amendment to the Constitution"...Is that right?
