(14 Year Old Girl Shot By Taliban) Malala Yousafzai: Thousands sign Nobel Peace Prize petition
Source: BBC
Malala's father said she was "humbled" by the support from around the world.
Tens of thousands of people around the world have signed an online petition calling for the Pakistani schoolgirl shot in the head by the Taliban to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The UK government has also been urged to back the campaign, with advocates saying Malala Yousafzai represents those denied an education.

In early 2009 she wrote an anonymous diary for BBC Urdu about life under the Taliban, who had banned all girls in her area from attending school.
Meanwhile Saturday has been declared a global day of action in Malala's name aimed at getting school places for 32 millions girls around the world who are not attending classes.

(1,663 posts)They hide behind their children and women. If they have no qualms about shooting a 14 year old girl at close range then do you believe they have qualms at using them as human shields?
At some point we have to just leave and let these countries deal with their own madmen and in some cases madwomen. Just like we have to deal with our own homegrown terrorists. The problem is then we have people begging America to intervene for humanitarian reasons.
You can't have it both ways. I don't have a problem with our military packing up and leaving these countries completely on their own. It is another reason to support alternative energy. I just don't want to hear any griping later about how their people are suffering under their own fanaticism and we need to intervene. I also don't want to hear complaints when we put serious bans on letting their fanatics from their "camps" immigrate here.
BTW, I agree she truly deserves the prize. I just hope she will one day grow up to realize her own religious beliefs are a big part of the problem. Organized religion and the militarism are closely allied but people refuse to accept that reality.

If anyone should be given the Peace Prize, it is she. She have being dong more to make the world a better place, than many others who have been given the Nobel Peace Prize lately to be honest..
She is a brave young girl, who would do a lot of good just with the money from the Nobel Peace Prize... But I guess Jageland and the others have other things to decide about, than give the prize to one who deserve it better than many others..

That was the wish of Alfred Nobel - when the Nobel Peace prize was made - in little over one hundred years ago.. But the reality is that the world have changed, far more than old Alfred Nobel be lived to be possible - and if that is the reason to give anyone the Nobel Peace Process most of them who was given the prize the last 40 year, should be given the prize, as they was not exactly in the business of reducing standing armies, and promotion of peace congresses...
The world change - the Nobel Peace Prize have to change with it.. But the more "Orthodox" understanding of the consent is something that some swedes have used, to justify that Sweden should be given back the whole Peace prize consent, as the Norwegian is not "up to what Nobel wanted"..
Yeah, as not Sweden have been in envy of Noway the last 20 years, as Norway have going from being the little brother (poorer and smaller) to rival his older brother Sweden, both in wealth and in standing... It is in this case, a old rivalry between Sweden and Norway, going back to old times..

(7,362 posts)I for one think his original charge is a good one.
Also I think if they are not going to honor his will they should return the money to his heirs. I for one would never donate money if I knew that a bit later whoever administered that money could just say "yeah well, that was a long time ago, we are going to do with it as we please"
But at least they should rename it to the Nobel "We are going to give it to anyone we really want, just to make whatever point we feel like making" award.

The original Goal, who Alfred Nobel put forward little over one hundred years ago, is a noble one, no doubt about it... But the world is not as it was when he was alive, when politicians and generals was mingling in the halls of Versailles and talking about making the world a better world - and in secret arming their self to the teeth for a war many of them wanted to "Cleanse the blood of the nation".. That was the reality of the world, when Alfred Nobel was given Norway - of all nations in the world, the peace prize in 1905.. A price the swedes have resented all time for given to Norway.. And they have alleyways bitches about taking the Nobel Peace Prize "back" to where they believe it belong - in Sweden, rather than accept the fact, that even Alfred Nobel itself wanted it given to Norway - not to Sweden..
And it is a long time since the early 1900s - th world HAVE changed dramatically since Alfred Nobel was given away most of his inheritance to prizes who should benefited the world, rather been used to make weapons to kill people.. you know, Alfred Nobel was the one who in the least 1800s, made it possible to make dynamite - a stuff who have always been used to kill people on a grand scale..
As is it, Sweden have no Nobel Peace Process - that is in Oslo Norway - and the best swedes should do, is to jape it up, and quiet wining about how bad it is, when people who are not in the halls of power, but who really do many things to make the world a little better place to be, is given the price.. Like this young girl, who have flighted from young age to give girls, and woman the same right as boys and men.. I think she at least deserve to be on the short list to next years nobel price... Not the same as given the prize - it is a few ones out there who might deserve it better - but she deserve to be on the short list..
And if the Swedish is so angry about it all, why they don't make their own Peace Prize - I know it is a few wealthy swedish from old families who have more than enough to make a prize posible...

(7,362 posts)First of all I disagree that the world is in such a different place that the original aim is not valid. I think world policy and diplomacy is pretty much the same as it always has been, and that there are plenty of people out there working for peace such that you can still give the award to someone.
2nd, I am not swedish, so I have no idea why you think everyone who thinks that the prize should be given to someone who actually is working towards peace as opposed to the internet fad du jour is somehow concerned about 100 year old gripe that the swedes have.

(22,109 posts)Under death threats from the Taliban to herself and her father, she campaigned for the ability of girls to go to school in Pakistan. The war against the ruthless and brutal Taliban isn't so much against a standing army as it is literally a battle for hearts and minds. What better way to build peace than to enable the girls, women, mothers to be educated where once they were just chattels?
Take a look at last years winners: http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/2011/press.html
Malala's impact has the potential to be as far reaching, if not further. She is a representative/role model of a new generation of girls struggling to be educated, who can be inspired by her to be like them.

(7,362 posts)Didn't deserve it by any standard of working for peace. 10 wrongs don't make a right.
And I agree she is a courageous girl, etc. But I think the award should go to whoever has done the most to advance the cause of Peace.

(22,109 posts)Countering the boys being brainwashed in madarassas with girls being enabled to go to school is a very strong foundation for peace there. Remember, those girls grow up to be the mothers of the boys in danger of being radicalized in the future.
You disagree with last years choices?
Have you looked at the impact she's having already? What she's inspired? The worldwide awareness she's created? Do you think Desmond Tutu nominated her for a peace prize last year on a whim?
Simply put, the Nobel Peace Prize is largely symbolic, and awarding it to Malala would be a very powerful message being sent to the enemies of peace in Pakistan, and anyone else who uses force against children for their own ends.
