U.S. warns of catastrophic consequences if Russia uses nuclear weapons in Ukraine

KYIV, Sept 25 (Reuters) - The United States warned on Sunday of "catastrophic consequences" if Moscow were to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, after Russia's foreign minister said regions holding widely-criticized referendums would get full protection if annexed by Moscow.

United States warned on Sunday of "catastrophic consequences" if Moscow were to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, after Russia's foreign minister said regions holding widely-criticized referendums would get full protection if annexed by Moscow.

Votes in four eastern Ukrainian regions, aimed at annexing territory Russia has taken by force, were staged for a third day on Sunday. The Russian parliament could move to formalize the annexation within days.

By incorporating the areas of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia into Russia, Moscow could portray efforts to retake them as attacks on Russia itself, a warning to Kyiv and its Western allies.

U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said on Sunday the United States would respond to any Russian use of nuclear weapons against Ukraine and that it had spelled out to Moscow the "catastrophic consequences" it would face.

Using nukes on Ukraine would leave the land & water useless. And lingering fallout would mean Russia couldn't extract other resources, either. Plus, if I'm reading the wind maps for this time of year correctly, the fallout would blow back toward Crimea and then Russia.

To be seen as a powerful and terrifying figure.

He will then move onto other countries.

of men can dictate that Russia suffer the consequences of Putin's war. It's all semantics and posturing over four territories that are being forced as hostage states. He can't just declare them as being Russian and justify what he is doing. He thinks that the rest of the world will buy this nonsense. He just keeps digging that hole, doesn't he?

I didn't understand why Ukraine was constrained from shooting over the border, but I am beginning to see it. Not because of nuclear threats from Putin, but because Ukraine can hold its head up. If Putin thinks, however, that he can nuke Ukraine and be impervious to the dreadful consequences, he better think again.

This is all over the seaports and shores that he wants. No one is fooled by his rhetoric.
