Jan. 6 committee postpones planned hearing as Hurricane Ian advances
Source: Washington Post
The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol is postponing its highly anticipated hearing because of Hurricane Ian, which is expected to barrel into the western coast of Florida on Wednesday, committee leaders announced Tuesday.
In light of Hurricane Ian bearing down on parts of Florida, we have decided to postpone tomorrows proceedings, chairman Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-Miss.) and vice-chair Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) wrote in a joint statement. Were praying for the safety of all those in the storms path.
Its unclear when the daytime hearing, which seeks to recapture the nations attention with what is likely to be the panels final public hearing before the release of a final report, will be rescheduled. Thompson and Cheneys statement noted, The Select Committees investigation goes forward and we will soon announce a date for the postponed proceedings.
The hearing follows eight highly produced, news-making hearings that aired over June and July, featuring blockbuster testimony from former White House officials, poll workers and law enforcement officers. During the committees August hiatus, staff doubled back to their investigative work to follow new leads and answer unresolved questions.

The hearing follows eight highly produced, news-making hearings that aired over June and July, featuring blockbuster testimony from former White House officials, poll workers and law enforcement officers. During the committee's August hiatus, staff doubled back to their investigative work to follow new leads and answer unresolved questions.
The final hearing is expected in part to focus on how associates of former president Donald Trump planned to declare victory regardless of the outcome of the 2020 election, according to people familiar with hearing planning. The Washington Post reported Monday that the committee intends to show video of Roger Stone recorded by Danish filmmakers during the weeks before the violence in which Stone predicted violent clashes with left-wing activists and forecast months before Election Day that Trump would use armed guards and loyal judges to stay in power.
This is a developing story and will be updated.

(144,933 posts)I checked earlier and found out that she is up in Asheville North Carolina. I am glad that she is not in the path of this storm

(128,502 posts)Am afraid she IS in the path if the track doesn't do any big changes... It won't be as strong as what FL would get but right now, the Carolinas are in the cone (and would get some good amount of rain in any case)...
We are even getting forecasts of some here in Philly...

(15,703 posts)I picked this yesterday. Anybody with a sense of any kind of intelligence knew this was coming and for those who thought that it wouldnt Not sure what to say. It was the most easiest prediction on earth. I was telling everybody in the neighborhood dont worry about missing the hearings, they will postpone worry about your house.

(5,821 posts)Plus, it gives them a little more time to sift through evidence. Meanwhile, look for leaks. I read somewhere they were going to release some information prior to the hearing so keep an eye out.

(2,769 posts)picking it up, but I just went over to the select committee page and it has not been updated yet to show postponement. Being former government employee, myself, I realize they're not johnny-on-the-spot with their websites (sigh)... but I felt like I wanted to let you know about it, anyway... This is just at 3pm cdt.

(2,769 posts)I don't do twitter... I usually go to the source, this time to the committee's page. Like I said, being former DoD, I ought to know better than to trust updates of their webpage (lol)... thanks for the tweet confirmation, tho. I was just so looking forward to the hearing tomorrow. I understand about postponing it. Will be a lot of breaking news coming down tomorrow, no doubt. I'll bet Trump wishes most of his stuff would come in tomorrow and get buried by Ian, too.
Frankly, I wish Ian would leave everyone else in Florida alone, and bullseye on Mar a largo! Just completely wash away that piece of crap.
Be safe, ya'll...

(128,502 posts)However it has become a major source of "announcements" from both the media and elected officials and has the benefit of being able to propagate information quickly and include web links directly to the main source. And since none of those media or officials are "techies", they rely on their staff to do the updates, and in many cases, they haven't yet drafted a "final" update to the web page before they send the "heads up" tweet, like a "PA system".
I am a retired federal employee myself so I understand, which is why I hunted around for various sources.

(3,491 posts)why. The hearing is in DC.
BumRushDaShow
(128,502 posts)from states in the current NHC cone, you have these many members of congress -
FL - 27
GA - 14
NC - 13
SC - 7
TN - 9
WV - 3
VA - 11
That is 84 who are not supposed to just be window dressing, and would actually need to be actively engaged with their staff in their home states/districts to respond to any impacts if Ian once it comes onshore.
And specifically, you have Stephanie Murphy, who is a J6 Committee member and who is a Rep. from FL. (and Elaine Luria is a Rep. from VA), so they should be accommodated.
claudette
(3,491 posts)that members other than those on the Jan. 6 committee itself had to be present at the hearing.
BumRushDaShow
(128,502 posts)you would have seen that I included that ONE of the members of the January 6 Committee IS from Florida. And as a note, if you were watching these hearings, you might have also noticed that there have been a number of members who have attended and who ALSO are Chairs of Committees and sub-Committees that have jurisdiction over what transpired regarding the January 6th insurrection and the electoral process tampering.
claudette
(3,491 posts)your post that one of the members of the Jan. 6 committee is from Florida and could understand if that person was busy elsewhere. And, for your information, I have watched all of the hearings and never once heard it mentioned who else besides the members of the Committee, the witnesses and the attendees in the audience were present. How would anyone know anything about Chairs of Committees, etc. being there unless it were made public? Maybe I missed it.
I'm not saying they should have the hearing tomorrow - I was only asking why a serious problem in Florida would affect something in DC. I know it will be rescheduled. I was just asking.
BumRushDaShow
(128,502 posts)Congress uses them as tools to gather information so they can draft, mark up, discuss, debate, and finalize legislation. And as part of that, they do a lot of "cross-cutting" between and within Committees and their sub-Committees.
So, for example, when the January 6th Committee started going through the issues that involved what were attempts to circumvent the Electoral process, guess what happened? The J6 Committee didn't suddenly "write the legislation" to try to fix it. OTHER Committees did and the House passed one such piece of legislation just a week ago - https://www.democraticunderground.com/10142972407
In a nutshell, the J6 Committee "did a lot of the groundwork" for those other Committees to use to come up with solutions.
Anyone who regularly watches Congressional hearings - notably on any of the CSPANs, and not just the "show hearings" like these, learns over time, to recognize who is who... and they will also communicate (nowadays using twitter) about how they were "sitting in on" certain hearings - whether in the audience OR sometimes even on the dais to ask questions of witnesses as a courtesy of the Committee. This is normal.
And also note that all of those members have staff AND the Committee itself appropriated funds for researchers and lawyers, who are working behind the scenes... and some may be residents of Florida who work in D.C., and may have family there in FL.
So I think it disingenuous to dismiss what is a storm that will certainly generate a major disaster in a number of states just because of a "hearing". And as someone else posted in this thread, most of the major news networks are probably going to do wall-to-wall coverage of Hurricane Ian and would ignore this hearing anyway, and DU would spend all day whining about it.
So best to wait to see how this storm manifests and they can be in the position to get better coverage of the important material that they want to present.
