NYC Migrants pile into vans they say are headed to Florida for hurricane Ian cleanup

Source: NY Post

Scores of Venezuelan migrants in New York City are hopping on vans to head down to Florida for Hurricane Ian clean-up, they told The Post.

The migrants had scant information about whom they would be working for, but they still piled into vans in Queens that they said were headed to the Sunshine State over the weekend.

“They want us for hurricane cleanup, we’d get paid $15 an hour, overtime and $15 for food daily, I think,” said Javier Moreno, 37, noting that a woman named Camila “from an organization” approached him with a flier.

“I’m going for the work. It’s been hard for us migrants to find work here in New York, that’s why a lot of us are going. How’s the work in Florida?”

Hispanic workers, probably some undocumented, were instrumental in disaster cleanup after Hurricane Katrina. Without migrant disaster workers, clean-up and rebuilding was impossible.

Gee, sounds like a reverse of DeSatan/Abbott's recent moves. A lady without portfolio says jobs are ready, hands a flyer out but doesn't say who she works for. Call-me-suspicious of any NYP statements.

DeSantis got the idea to use Perla based on real life people who do this stuff.

They will "work" for an unknown group, but who knows what will really happen to them.

Some of these are human traffic rings who prey on vulnerable migrants.

They aren't going to be working for FEMA.

I found out from one of the shelters here in San Antonio, that people meet migrants at the bus station and lure them away with promises of work. Apparently it happens all the time, but it just never makes the news.

I really don't think DeSantis is involved. There are plenty of opportunists who will have them work and not pay them.

It's illegal to hire asylum seekers prior to them being in the US for (6 months??) Any work they perform is odd jobs and under the table.

It appears to be someone exploiting migrants and someone told the press.

If DeSantis hadn't sent immigrants to MV, this story would not be in the news.

I was watching one of his MV pressers. DeSatan says "They were homeless and hungry, so we sent them to a nice sanctuary place. And we will continue to do this until Biden forces them to "Stay in Mexico""

Good grief. How sadistic. He's saying
"Texas sucks"
"Let's send them somewhere nice"
"But we really want them to be homeless and hungry in Mexico".

Heck, I live in San Antonio and didn't know anything about "Perla". I just recently learned that there are human trafficking rings who prey on migrants at the local greyhound bus station. (Migrants arrive in SA from the border) People meet them at the bus station and offer them "work". This work is often illegal work because asylum seekers cannot legally work for like (6 months??) after they arrive in the US. So, they do odd jobs. Sometimes it's just a temporary odd job, other times it's worse.

It's just on our radar because of what happened with DeSantis.....These stories usually don't make the news.

This happens a lot in storm damaged areas: private companies will work these illegal migrants for weeks, then the workers will not get paid. And Americans who would get the work remain jobless, because they would have to be paid.

Sadly, after a natural disaster, the fly-by-night companies suddenly appear to take advantage of the victims. I hope and pray this isn't one of those companies, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is. These immigrants do not have a clue how they can be ripped off. Once they get down there, they may be stuck working as slave labor for these fly-by-night companies.

Migrants are abused like this.

I don't trust that rag to tell the truth.

Just cause Desatan sent Perla Huerta to Texas from Tampa to fill the planes illegally with migrant workers, doesn't mean the Post decided to tell the truth for a change. For all we know, the post hired Perla too.

I think this is BS or a stunt. Never trust a snake to not be a snake.

It called, "Exploiting"...

May not have anything to do with DeSantis. DeSatan got his idea from this stuff. Sadly it happens every day. People promise migrants work, then don't pay then etc, Migrants are often met at bus stops and lured with promising work.

The one, who makes the outrages claims has the burden of proof. That would be the Post, and they provide declarations of a more and more convuluted theory without any evidence. Everything in that article could be a lie or staged.

I don't know if something vaguely like that happened. I DO know the Post lies, they lie a lot. So, Based on a known lying source, I think what they wrote is BS.

This DU thread didn't consider the whole thing a lie

https://www.democraticunderground.com/100217219049

This terrifies me, based on what I experienced after Katrina in Mississippi.
Migrants were packed into barracks without a/c or heat. The barracks were surrounded by 6ft high chain link fence, topped with barbed wire. Alligators were let loose to patrol the grounds at night. The organization housing them confiscated their IDs (visas, other papers) and would not allow the workers access. They sent the migrants into the most toxic and dangerous sites with little protection, and when their portion of the clean-up was done, they called ICE and had all the workers deported for being undocumented. (Remember, the org had their documents.)

Who is this company that won't answer their phone? How long have they been in business? And how did they recruit these workers? There's a Perla-esque feeling to this development that I find deeply disturbing.
