WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) Jurors ordered conspiracy theorist Alex Jones on Wednesday to pay nearly $1 billion to Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims relatives and an FBI agent, who said he turned their loss and trauma into years of torment by promoting the lie that the rampage was a hoax. The $965 million verdict is the second big judgment against the Infowars host for spreading the myth that the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history never happened, and that the grieving families seen in news coverage were actors hired as part of a plot to take away peoples guns.
The verdict came in a defamation lawsuit filed by some of the families of 26 people who were killed in the 2012 shooting, plus an FBI agent who was among the first responders. A Texas jury in August awarded nearly $50 million to the parents of another slain child. Robbie Parker, who lost his 6-year-old daughter, Emilie, said outside the Connecticut court that he was proud that what we were able to accomplish was just to simply tell the truth.
And it shouldnt be this hard, and it shouldnt be this scary, said Parker, who became an early target of conspiracy theorists after he spoke at a news conference the day after the shooting. The jury awarded him the most of any plaintiff: $120 million. Jones wasnt at court but reacted on his Infowars show. As courtroom video showed the jury awards being read out, Jones said that he himself had never mentioned the plaintiffs names. All made up. Hilarious, he said. So this is what a show trial looks like. I mean, this is the left completely out of control.
Jones lawyer, Norm Pattis, portrayed the trial as unfair and pledged to appeal. Today is a very, very, very dark day for freedom of speech, he said outside court. The jury awarded various sums to the victims relatives, who testified that they were threatened and harassed for years by people who believed the lies told on Jones show. Strangers showed up at the families homes to record them. People hurled abusive comments on social media.

Original article, headline and source -
CNN Business -- A Connecticut jury has reached a decision on how much far-right talk show host Alex Jones should pay eight families of Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims and one first responder, capping a wrenching weeks-long trial that put on display for the public the serious harm inflicted by the conspiracy theorist's lies.
The decision marks the culmination of a years-long process that began in 2018 when the families took legal action against Jones and his company, Free Speech Systems, the parent of the fringe media organization Infowars. Jones baselessly said again and again after the 2012 mass shooting, in which 26 people were killed, that the incident was staged, and that the families and first responders were "crisis actors."
The plaintiffs throughout the trial described in poignant terms how the lies had prompted unrelenting harassment against them and compounded the emotional agony of losing their loved ones. Plaintiffs in the trial included family members of eight school students and employees, in addition to one FBI agent who responded to the scene. The three cases were all condensed into the single trial.
Christopher Mattei, an attorney for the plaintiffs, urged jurors to award at least a half a billion dollars for having permanently mangled the lives of his clients. The figure, he said, would represent the more than 550 million online impressions Jones' Sandy Hook lie allegedly received online. "You may say that is astronomical. It is," Mattei said. "It's exactly what Alex Jones set himself up to do. That's what he built. He built a lie machine that could push this stuff out. You reap what you sow."

(4,022 posts)looks like about 1/2 is for emotional damage and the rest for actual damages which makes it much harder to overturn on appeal.

(4,022 posts)say 20% of the damages or 200m.

(5,838 posts)In Calif, if the losing party does not post a bond on a money judgment, the winning party can begin collections immediately. Filing an appeal does not stop enforcement/collection of the judgment on appeal.
Edit to add: The bond is greater than the amount of the judgment in almost all cases.

(5,838 posts)IMO, those plaintiff literally OWN him for life!!!!!!
And, at least in Calif, any unpaid portion of a judgment collects interest...at a judgment rate which is 10% in Calif.
Hope it close to the same for the plaintiffs in this case.

(3,477 posts)No, Norm, your heart doesn't go out to the families. Yes, we do live in divided times. Your client helped that along. No, they haven't been weaponized. Your client weaponized his followers and used them and his network for political purposes. No, it isn't a dark day for freedom of speech, because the First Amendment doesn't protect the sort of speech your client engaged in and never has.
Irony truly is dead. Unbelievable.

(20,870 posts)He might fundraise and let others pay, but he's way too selfish to spend his money on anything outside himself. Alex Jones is one of many floating alongside TFG in life boats. It's too easy to cut the line.

(15,426 posts)Alex Jones would NEVER have been able to spread such lies if we had a Fairness Doctrine similar to the one Reagan pocket-vetoed in the way-back-when.
I will say that this in nice to see. The Sandy Hook parents should NEVER have had to relive their nightmare in court with a dirt-bag like Jones. Nonetheless, this verdict, along with other things going on, may provide the corporate owned media with some real parameters in truth-in-news. If it cost Fox, for example, $500 million for perpetuating Trumpy's 'big lie,' then it might force some corporate responsibility in how news is reported.
As to Alex, perhaps a prison term would be good, as well.
nuxvomica
(14,092 posts)And "Celebrity Net Worth" already lists his net worth at $-900 billion. That's minus.
Jones did real damage to people's lives with his lies and they say there was a very high bar for proving him liable, which the plaintiffs did. But beyond that, there are other people in the lying-for-politics industry that are going to know he exceeded that bar but they won't know by how much, or where that bar actual is. So this is a victory not only for the plaintiffs but for honest speech as well.
JohnnyRingo
(20,870 posts)I know many will say he needs to pay more, and that he's getting off light. I ask how much is enough? a billion? A trillion? A gazillion dollars? There's a point that it just doesn't matter.
Let's be realistic. That's more liability than I ever heard of levied against one person, or his basement studio media empire. This is more of a message than smacking a puppy's nose for crapping in the corner, and not just to Jones. You can bet Hannity, Carlson, Michael Savage, and Mark Levin all heard this verdict and now know there could be a big penalty to pay for Social Arson. The world just became a more polite planet.
I believe he got just what he deserved. A crippling penalty that he'll never recover from. Good!!

(29,785 posts)The edit history of this post shows that it did not originally have the substantive info about the verdict, which is the real story here. Because of that, the hosts consensus is that it did not meet the SOP until after it was edited to include that info. Since pnwmom posted the substantive news before your edit, we feel the fair result is to allow their OP to stand, so this one needs to be locked as a dupe.
