Russian-installed governor of Ukraine's Kherson suggests residents leave
Source: Reuters
The Russian-installed governor of Ukraine's Kherson region offered on Thursday to help its residents leave amid intense fighting between Russian and advancing Ukrainian forces - prompting a rapid denial from his deputy that an "evacuation" was taking place.
In a video statement on Telegram, Vladimir Saldo publicly asked for Moscow's help in transporting civilians to safer regions of Russia.
"As such, the leadership of Kherson administration has decided to provide Kherson families with the option to travel to other regions of the Russian Federation to rest and study," he said, adding that people should "leave with their children".
...
But moments later, the region's deputy governor posted a video saying Saldo's appeal to Moscow was "not a call for evacuation".

Vladimir Saldo, the Russian-installed governor of Kherson, has urged families in the southern Ukrainian region to evacuate to parts of Russia "for leisure and study".
He says it is necessary because of the serious damage caused by Ukrainian missiles hitting "hotels, residential houses, markets - where there are lots of civilians", and asked the Russian leadership to help with the evacuation.
..
The UK Ministry of Defence said this morning that Russian forces are most likely trying to form a new front line after retreating around 12.4 miles (20km) in the north of the region.
The ministry also added it's likely Russian occupiers are preparing to evacuate some civilians in anticipation of fighting extending to Kherson city.

Who the inhabitants of Kherson are that actually support Saldo or Putin is another matter, of course. I'd be afraid that this would be another kidnapping/forced relocation:
Moscow will help evacuate residents of Ukraine's occupied Kherson region, Russia's deputy prime minister Marat Khousnoulin says.
It comes after the Russian-installed head of the region, Vladimir Saldo, appealed to Russia for assistance.
Khousnoulin told Russian television that "the government decided to organise assistance for the departure of residents of the region to other regions of the country."
Ukraine has been on the offensive in the southern Kherson region in recent days, despite Moscow declaring it to be part of Russia after a self-declared referendum which has been widely condemned by the international community.

(19,868 posts)Kherson is part of Ukraine, not the Russian Federation. Putin, you can't steal parts of a country and claim them for Russia.

(35,337 posts)It's made few gains in the last week (mostly it's taken disputed territory in Khersonshchyna, not even caused Russian-held territory to become disputed).
Here's hoping that it's weakening and thinning Russian lines so that there'll be either a collapse of the Russian lines or a planned massive Russian pull-back in Luhanshchyna and Khersonshchyna, and that the Ukr forces can take advantage of the SW situation to push east of the Dnipro River, not allowing the river to become a defensible line of control. (In that case the only easy way to clear the area would be an attack in Zaporizhzhia.)

Get out while you can. Safely.
And then don't come back.
Give Putin something more to worry about.
