Google approves Truth Social for the Google Play Store

Truth Social, the social media app backed by former President Donald Trump, has been approved for the Google Play Store, Google said Wednesday.
The decision means Truth Social will now be downloadable to Android smartphones via Googles proprietary app store, after Truth Social moved to implement stronger content moderation policies.
Google had previously said Truth Social could not appear in its app store until it had implemented policies that sufficiently addressed incitement and threats of violence. It had also said social media apps on the Google Play store must provide an in-app system for reporting objectionable content. (Truth Social had already been available to some Android devices via non-Google sources, such as the Samsung Galaxy store.)

(1,625 posts)To me it looks just like Twitter, only red colors instead of blue. Assuming it's a total ripoff of Twitter (pretty safe assumption), you'd think Twitter would sue. I don't understand that one.

(11,919 posts)but I don't want to give up the amount of personal information it probably wants, and definitely don't want that app on my phone. It's probably snooping through every phone it's on.

(54,878 posts)Almost all others out there are just repackaged Android, so still Google at core.
Pretty much leaves HarmonyOS from the extremely problematic Chinese government controlled (and banned in many nations) Huawei. Zero chance I would ever use that.

But because it's you Celerity, and you are not normally a badgering type person - a no-name non-smart phone from AustPost with a prepaid Aldi SIM. It stays turned off in the car glovebox in case I need roadside assistance.
I have a house full of computers and don't need, want nor expect to be contacted while in on the beach, the rocks or in the bush. The people who matter know where and how to find me.

(21,029 posts)Sold by the Au. Post Office - big button etc. Easy to see and handle and pretty cheap - they are obviously not the most heavy duty phones but great for what I want.
It's similar to this phone, only last year's model.

(5,350 posts)Android allows "sideloading" of apps, installing them by simply downloading them from the Web without going through the Play Store, much like you would on a computer. You have to check a box in the security settings to allow it, but Android will helpfully point you to the setting the first time you try to install something; if you're capable of opening Chrome and tapping a link you're capable of installing the app, adding it to the Play Store makes it easier to find but I frankly doubt it's going to massively increase the Android userbase as anyone who wants it already has it.
Apple does not permit sideloading, period the only way to install apps is via the App Store, allowing Truth there is explicit approval of the installation and use of the app.
