Lights go out in Ukraine as Russia launches "massive" strike

Source: AP

By ANDREW MELDRUM and JOANNA KOZLOWSKA

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Hundreds of thousands of people in central and western Ukraine woke up on Saturday to power outages and periodic bursts of gunfire, as Ukrainian air defense tried to shoot down drones and incoming missiles.

Russia has intensified its strikes on power stations, water supply systems and other key infrastructure across the country, the latest phase of the war as it nears the eight-month mark.

Ukraine’s air force said in a statement Saturday that Russia had launched “a massive missile attack” targeting “critical infrastructure,” hours after air raid sirens blared across the country. It said that it had downed 18 out of 33 cruise missiles launched from air and sea.

“Several rockets” targeting the capital were shot down on Saturday morning, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging service.

Russia has declared its intention to increase its targeting of Ukraine's power, water and other vital infrastructure in its latest phase of the nearly 8-month-old war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says that Moscow's forces have destroyed nearly a third of the country's power stations since Oct. 10. (AP Photo/Emilio Morenatti)

Not to forget that Ukrainians are dying because of Putin's mad ego and unwillingness to admit mistakes.

Iran has more capable munitions in its arsenal. And there are fears that even more dangerous Iranian weapons - ballistic missiles - could soon be on their way to Russia.

EU, NATO, and other countries are supplying much needed devices and supplies for winter, here's hoping it will be enough.

Anti-drone and missile devices are forthcoming if not already there and to my understanding Ukrainians are taking back occupied territories while keeping there eyes on Belarus and more drones/missiles from Iran.

Russia as a country is failing and Putin is taking his frustrations out on Ukraine.

top secret documents on Iran? Trump doesn't just admire Putin, he is his puppet. I can envision Putin ordering Trump to get those top secret documents to Iran in return Iran is supplying Putin with drones. Putin must have some really bad dirt on Trump and it is worse than pee tapes.

Trump also had documents on China and Putin needs help from China also.

Trump is a traitor and needs to be indicted now.

With winder coming, how many Ukrainians will simply freeze to death? This is a humanitarian crisis of an enormous scale in progress. I know many disagree, but I believe NATO should have stepped in long before now. What was the rationale for helping Kuwait, not a NATO member, expel Iraq but not helping Ukraine expel Russia? The answer of course is nuclear weapons, but Putin is holding the world economy hostage with his threats. Appeasing a bully never works, and will NATO just keep sending enough weapons for Ukraine to keep going but not win? Putin will not negotiate because he doesn’t care if every person in Ukraine dies and every city is nothing but rubble. Is that what NATO members are willing to allow?

no power, no heat. Damn you, belligerent, warlike assholes in Russia.

We have to step up our support somehow or we are likely to witness another mass migration from Ukraine.

They'll just have to take Crimea back, and nail the launch points.

Sucks to be Iran. This won't be forgotten. War is a two way street, and you can't win without boots on the ground, which Russia doesn't have anymore.

Russia just ramped up Ukrainian resolve. Not too smart of Putin. Time to do the bridge again.
