More Republicans trust DeSantis than Trump to chart path of GOP: poll
Source: The Hill
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) topped former President Trump in a new poll asking GOP voters who they trust to guide the party into the future.
The ABC News/Ipsos poll, published on Sunday, found that 72 percent of registered Republicans believe that DeSantis, a former U.S. congressman, should have a great or good deal of influence in the future direction of the GOP, while 64 percent of respondents said the same of Trump.
Sixty-three percent of registered Republicans believe that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who ran for president in 2016, should have significant influence in the partys direction, according to the poll.
Among Democrats who were asked the same question, 83 percent of those surveyed believe that former President Obama should have great influence over the partys future, as 69 percent of respondents believe President Biden should call the shots over the direction of the party.

DeSantis, the smarter Trump. As long as the system rewards / doesn't prosecute the top layer of American politicians, we are doomed to get smarter and smarter "Strong Man" leaders until one does us all in.
Vote yet? I did.

I submit, however, most of the American people aren't looking for stunts.

(685 posts)The odds of Trump winning are low, the odds of DeSantis winning are pretty good when "regular" Republicans compare him to Trump. Trump is nothing more than a racist, homophobic, grifter. DeSantis is evil, he wants power and his ability to manipulate runs rings around Trump.
Look at it this way Hitler was a sick, twisted loon but Joseph Goebbels was pure evil but could control himself There was never any question about what would eventually happen with Hitler in power, if it had been Goebbels instead thing might very well have gone differently.

DeSantis, on the other hand, is extremely targeted and believes in fascism as a cause unto itself, and is somewhat smarter...
The best thing we could hope for, is a GQP nomination contest between the 2 of them, where they will not hesitate to destroy each other...

Cancun Cruz? Really?
I'm a little sceptical of this entire poll (well, it IS The Hill).

(7,794 posts)It's a perfect setup for totalitarianism. It makes the "restorers of great civilizations" in post WWI Europe look like abject amateurs. Those guys were too dependent on their strong-arm tactics. The current Americanization of cultural darkness brutalizes relatively few, marginalizes the concerns of relatively many, all done with the casual yet passive/aggressive confirmation of a "majority".
How many among us have already experienced some form of "papers please" and hear the tacit "everything seems to be in order" with a slight inner sigh of relief? Is that inner "sigh" edged with inconvenience nee-desperation a bit more than last year? I graduate into another decade the last of this week and am here to confirm what P. Simon had to say on the matter when he sang, "How terribly strange to be 70". Though I'm not sure this is what he meant at the time because it's unlikely he had pre-knowledge of the relentless criticality, GIGO.

(5,336 posts)Trump was "was the dumbest goddam student I ever had; DeSantis was magna cum laude at Yale and cum laude at Harvard Law, and did some pretty heavy work with the JAG Corps. Yes yes, I know that fancy degrees don't necessarily mean smarts, cf. GWB, but DeSantis isn't from the kind of family that would be gifted an Ivy degree
IIRC his dad installed Nielsen boxes, that's hardly Skull and Bones blood.
Mix that level of brains and competence with his sociopolitical beliefs and hunger for power and you get something that's almost immeasurably worse than the loony, barking ideologue that is Trump.
I hope and pray (to His Noodliness, thankyouverymuch) that there's still enough rabid, blind MAGAts to make Trump the nominee. He won't win, but DS is calm and "respectable" enough that he could easily be the different nominee that Mike Pence & co. might prefer.

They come back with a smarter version of what almost worked and try again.
And if that almost works too they come back even smarter.
Just look how fast MAGA candidates went from outliers to winning GOP primaries easy.

Make no mistake: The attempt to harness Trumpismwithout Trump, but with calculated, refined, and smarter political talentis coming. And it wont be easy to make the next Trumpist a one-term president.
I wish I had confidence that our DOJ will do something about it, but I don't.
