Chinese officers charged in plot to obstruct US Huawei probe

Source: AP

By ERIC TUCKER and NOMAAN MERCHANT

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two men suspected of being Chinese intelligence officers have been charged with attempting to obstruct the U.S. criminal investigation and prosecution of Chinese tech giant Huawei, according to court documents unsealed Monday.

The cases were announced at a news conference that featured the heads of both the FBI and the Justice Department, a rare joint presence reflecting a concerted American show of force against Chinese intelligence efforts. Washington has long accused Beijing of meddling in U.S. political affairs and stealing secrets and intellectual property.

Eleven other Chinese have been charged with various offenses in cases, including harassment of individuals in the U.S., that FBI Director Christopher Wray said show that China’s “economic assaults and their rights violations are part of the same problem.”

“They try to silence anyone who fights back against their theft — companies, politicians, individuals — just as they try to silence anyone who fights back against their other aggressions,” he said.

Fist you stand up the dominos then you knock them down. First charge the Chinese then pull in the initiator, trump, remember trump wanted to change the White House phones to that company. Every one told him no because they put spyware in their phones. Trump didn’t care and jarred & Ivanka made over 600 million in china. Dominoes anyone?

Complaints that DoJ hasn't done other things, that many would prefer, are, imo, uncalled for.

The Department of Justice is a large and critical portion of the U.S. government, and short-sighted people who don't recognize this are foolish (to be kind.)

Glad they're spending so much time on that since there's nothing even remotely like that happening here in the US.

I guess the Huawei case affects the pocketbooks of our oligarchs, plutocrats and billionaires, so it goes right to the front burner. Everything else will wait until either they get around to it or, as is more likely, memory of it will fade away, the republicans regain control, or the malefactors will be dead.

of. Apparently the DOJ can walk and chew gum at the same time.

As to the rest of your post, how do you know that the Huawei case only affects “oligarchs and plutocrats?”

As DU’er Snoopy 7 noted above, their phones are laden with spyware. Trump tried to get the federal government to buy and use their phoned.

I'm glad that DOJ and associated sub agencies were on the ball and ran with it. It can't be a bigger news item, it seems, because we are not familiar with such spying by China. But, it is mind boggling that Chinese nationalists would come to our country and then threaten people living here. I am glad that this has been stopped.

And, at least we remember the phone incidents. DOJ did not name the company involved, but three sets of docs were unsealed, so I guess that's right.

There were so many individuals named that it is unclear if any of them were actually arrested. Sucks to be China, caught red handed. Let's see what they do in the UN. Usually, their focus there is to caution regarding economics. Their focus is on money. Whenever they speak, you don't really have to pay that much attention, because they always head down that path, like a broken record.
